  • What do you eat before working out?

I exercise first thing in the morning after I take my thyroid hormone. I have to wait 30 min. before eating anything so I have been working out without food. I drink a lot of water though. Is this a bad idea to exercise on an empty stomach?

I am under the assumption that it is good for you to exercise on an empty stomach. I believe it has something to do with your mitochondria. Vague, I know, but i have been reading lots of stuff and that sticks in my mind.

It really depends. If you have issues with your blood sugar going too low it might not be good. Also, if you don't have enough fuel to pull from your body could pull from muscle, which is not what we want! When I would exercise earlier in the morning after taking my thyroid, I would take my thyroid, then brush and get dressed to do my workout, get my water, and it was close to the right amount of time. Then I would eat either a handful of almonds, a cheese stick, something to have a little something on my stomach. If I ate too much it made me sick. If it hasn't caused you any issues yet, you might be fine, just be sure to eat right afterwards so you're fueling those muscles well!

It really depends on your current diet and your health condition. If you are on low carb diet or ultra low carb diet and that your body is not healed enough to switch to using stored fat as fuel, when you exercise and use up all the stored carb at your liver, you will run into dizziness, cold, shaking type of low blood sugar condition. If that is you right now, please eat before exercise. Eat some carb and some fat or protein to make the carb last... Eat before exercise to avoid a crash is better strategy. In addition, when we do resistance training exercise, the body will produce human growth hormone to repair and rebuild. Insulin spike will negate that production... that means it is better than you don't eat that much carby food to spike insulin at least for any hour after workout.

However, if you have no problem switching fuel from carb to fat, then it does not matter, you can do exercise before eating or after eating.

Tina-thanks I have read that too and then heard conflicting information so I asked here!

Trisch- I would not have thought to brush before working out, but since I would do it anyway, it makes sense to do it first so I can grab a little snack before exercising.

ayj67-I was low carb (about 50 g per day) for about 2 years. Then my sleep suffered so I am trying to up that to 75-100 g per day. I haven't really ever felt dizzy or shaky working out without eating, but my cortisol was in the high end of normal last time it was checked,so I didn't want to stress my system. Thanks for your answer.

75-100 gram is still rather low for carb... I doubt you will have insulin spike. So, it does not really matter if you eat or not eat before workout... there is no need to be stressed out about it at all for you.

Hi, Sheri, I'm a night owl, so work out and take thyroxine at night. I have my last meal around 6 :30 PM, exercise at 9 PM, take thyroxine at midnight. There are different school of thought about exercising on an empty stomach, it's safe enough if you don't have diabetes or liver issues, but not otherwise. DO NOT exercise on an empty stomach if you've had a drink (alcohol) the night before- on that I'm clear, and I'm a doctor so I should know! Much higher chances of having a low sugar.
          Best wishes.

Dittoing Sheri: Trisch, I think that your practice of skin brushing *before* exercise is brilliant!
After I work out, I want to shower. However, the thought of running a dry brush over my sweaty, sticky skin is so unappealing that I usually opt for skipping skin brushing. You have solved my problem!

I understand, Shelley! It's tough to want to brush hot, sweaty skin!
