  • I need help with my calves (debulk and balance)

One my big wins the past two weeks is shaving off 1/2 inch my right calf. My left calf reshaped as well but the 1/2 inch difference is visible.

Background: Back in 2018, when I was starting out, a big knot that protrudes on the outer side of the left calf (giving it bulk and was painful) melted away with T-Tapp. It has continued to slim little by little but I was a bit surprised at the big change on my right side. I'm can feel I have imbalances but I'm not sure what. [p.s. if my any of my old posts confuses my left and right I apologize]

The past 2 weeks, I've been doing 3 moves from Chair Cruisers + arch/scoop and lower leg stretches almost every day. Plus, 8 days of DD 3-5 reps (about 4 with some activation, the rest was learning the sequence) and about 7 days of AL (only 2 with some activation), and a bit of broom instructions.

Should I keep up with the DD and AL but always start on my left side only for a week and see if that helps balance them out?
Or, DD and AL only the left side?
Maybe I need to add another move in my routine like standing PBS with KLT and ankle activate?

    I'd appreciate thoughts BlessedMama ayj67!
As I always say, T-Tapp is God-Given and God Guided. I am honored to have the opportunity to share what's been gifted to me. There is so much more woven within each of the T-Tapp exercise and special sequences within the workouts than just a means to lose inches and look good......So good luck....just do your personal best and you WILL continue to repair/rebuild from the inside out and your body will continue to look, feel and FUNCTION better too. - Teresa (April 12, 2018)

GreenGem I am so intrigued to read responses. I remember now that you say this, that either Trisch or Margaret stated to swap the leg you start with when doing DD. I had totally forgotten this but am now wondering if this is why my left hip is really bothering me since the challenge, I always start out on that side. I would have to log which leg I started out on - because my memory stinks LOL

Yes, another reason to log. I do switch starting sides, but relying on my my memory might not have been the best strategy. Too funny, now that I think about it.

Green Gem, I do not think you always want to start with one side, be it the weaker side or the stronger side. It is better than your alternate, but do as many rep and as wide of the angle as the weaker side can handle. That is how you will balance out both side eventually.

I am not sure what the knot is, but the systematic strengthening of the vessels and the muscle happened with correct nutrient and exercise (circulation and fascia stretch).

The bulking of the calves is due to the under development of glutes and quads. To balance everything out, the even use of muscles from hip, glues, quads and calves are necessary. So, if you are a heel walker, you need to start placing more weight at the quad and use more hip and glutes muscles. Don't lean back and do not over use the heels. I think AL will help you balance out the whole legs.

Thanks for sharing your wisdom and experience! I just read your PSA in the other thread. I will follow your advice and update after 2 weeks. AL feels good.

Two week update: My left calf lost 1/4", with no change to right. Switching starting sides ( MWF as left days) definitely helped!

As for daily activities, I realized that when standing for a long time, I tend to put the left leg in the back (similar to the T-Tapp poses) with a bit of klt to balance. But I also tend to put most of my weight there in the back leg. I have been doing my best to be mindful about this as well and try to switch legs often.

My legs as a whole have never been equal and that is okay. Increasing balance, range of motion and mobility are the primary goals.

[3/12/20: 2018 60-Day Challenge email shows my calves measured 13.75 (both) and they were prone to swelling and cramping. 2 years to get rid of 0.75 inches on both, right debulked slightly faster. I still consider it a win]

Glad to hear that switching sides has helped even things out a bit.

OK, so another 2-week update: I took a break from floor moves and most standing moves due to mild vertigo after getting sick. I did continue being mindful of trying to switch starting sides daily and making sure to balance the use or activation of my left and right (the wall helps a lot!). The vertigo is gone and I can go back to AL,DD, and studying PT and BBFF moves bit by bit.

Today is day 1 of my 10-Day AL + DD challenge so I measured my calves... and surprise, surprise! My left calf lost another 1/4", my right calf a teeny bit, so both sides are now close to equal! I hope this is an indicator that I'm on the right track to a more balanced body and better brain-body connection.

Yup, quite normal and great for being mindful! Normally, balancing out happens during 60 Days challenge and you got result right at the 60 days!

Thanks! I think my arms (right arm was bigger) are getting there as well but they are so hard to measure.

GreenGem Glad to hear the Vertigo has subsided.

In response to measure arms, you may try this - https://www.amazon.com/Measure-Push-...4891901&sr=8-3

You make it bigger than needed, slip it onto your arm and up to your bicep, push a button to tighten it...all one handed because it is so easy. Do it so you can see the number easily.
