    An Interesting Way to Tell If You're Using Lats or Traps

    Today while walking through a store, I was noticing how my traps were a bit tight, so I lifted ribs, trying to duplicate the "feel" of Kayla's video (without putting my hands under them and lifting! LOL!). As my shoulders gently settled back, I noticed that when I relaxed my traps a bit, my shoulders didn't feel tense and my arms would swing more freely (but naturally). I started noticing that normally, we're more...controlled? When we walk we naturally swing the arms a bit, but when you carry the tension more in your traps, it's almost like you're trying to control how much they swing. It's automatic, but if you focus on it, you'll feel what I mean.

    Now think to lift the ribs, or you can even place your fingers underneath and lift like Kayla shows, letting the shoulders settle back. Do you feel the more equal activation of the shoulder muscles, and of the back muscles? Now walk, trying to keep your neck/shoulder area more relaxed like that and just gently let your arms swing. It's still natural, you're not swinging like a monkey or anything! But there's more freedom of movement. It's a subtle thing, so don't stress if you don't get this right away. Sometimes I'm concentrating TOO hard and can't get it!

    Do beware that you don't let the abs go while doing this! Quite a balancing act!
