I posted and the whole thing was lost! Boo!
I have a question. Y'all remember a couple of yrs ago I told you dd was terrible at reading. Well she still is. I would say a good yr behind. They totally missed she was so far behind until the end of the school yr. She misses words and guesses something with only maybe 1 or 2 letters of that word. She add or subtracts endings. She isn't much better than when I put her in school. Maybe a little faster. Thing is upon working with her she is smart. She can tell you about the story even though she is missing half the words. Comprehension is great. Context clues are used for understanding and meaning. I used to think maybe she just wasn't that bright and struggled but now I know that isn't the case. She was so good at flying through her tests reading it wrong they totally missed she wasn't reading right. Would you think this would be a dyslexic thing She still reads the word saw as was. Would you think her eyes may have issues? Our insurance is crap and won't cover squat until we pay out $3000 for the yr. So I don't want to waste money but want her to get her eyes checked if it is the case. My ds who is dyslexic was very slow at learning to read. Writing was TERRIBLE and didn't happen. He is a nerd to the hills anyways. I do see some tendencies that are the same but thier issues are not quite the same. Any thoughts? How to help her?
Sorry for being quick but ds is having a meltdown now.

Sounds like my son but he is still having a hard time staying within the context so he can use them for clues in his reading. He is WAY below grade level, but is coming along....slowly. We did do vision therapy and that helped tremendously. Our eye dr says he is/was her star student! He was able to train his eyes and increased his field of vision. He is 14, btw, and dyselxic. Get a copy of the book The Dyslexic Advantage. It is AWESOME!

Jennifer - That book does look good.
Nicole - I'd call and talk to them before going. See if you can't get a preliminary eye test to see if there are issues. I'd also explain your situation that you can't go but would possibly like home execises to do with the occasional check up. My optometrist said to do that when I explained that it was 45 min there and back and taking 3 hours out of the day was challenging.

Rose - What age seems to be good to start piano?? My DD wants to take lessons. She loves music. At the age of 2 we went into a boutique like store and they had an opera tenor on the radio. She stopped everything and tried to sing with him. It was so funny to watch. Right now she goes to the keyboard and just listens to the notes. She doesn't hammer it like most kids. I'm concerned that her hands aren't big enough and the extra practicing after school thing...I'm not quite sure she is ready.

Wendy's advice to talk with them about having exercises you can do at home is great! There is also something called Moving Window (I think)...it's a computer program that exposes each word at a time and then will speed up the faster the child reads. I've looked into it and I think you actually need a "scrip" from the dr to get it. My eye dr told me that one of her patients used something else in the school setting that sounded even better. I'll have to look it up and send you a link. Maybe that is something her school can look into, Nikki.
All week is supposed to be cool, windy, and rainy. Our spring has arrived!!! Seeing as we have already had a good part of summer, I guess it's time for Spring! LOL
