Default First time making beef broth

Ok, I threw my bones in the crock pot. I bought them from the local grocery store and I am certain there was bone in them when I put them in. Added water and 1/4 C vinegar, onions, and carrots. Cooked on low for 24 hours.

My bones completely dissolved! o_O Is that supposed to happen? Does that mean my broth is doubly rich in calcium etc? It's still ok to eat?

I am such a novice at this.

    Thanks bunches.

Oh, my! I've never heard of bones completely dissolving before!! I'd never heard of adding vinegar to broth, though. Wonder if the vinegar ate the bones....I'll be watching to hear what others say to this. I would think that it should still be safe to eat. You cooked it long enough to kill all the undesirables.....

The page I got my recipe from said that the vinegar draws the calcium from the bones. I just never expected the bones to be totally gone.

She called me, Jennifer! I never heard of that, either! I'm putting out a question to the GAPS list I'm on to see if they've experienced it!

I'll be interested in knowing. Remember what my sister asked about the Mad Cow disease and pulling stuff from the bones for broth? Interesting!

When you put an egg in vinegar, the shell softens & "disappears" so perhaps bones do the same?

I have a bunch of beef bones. How do you make soup with the crock pot?

Put the bones in the crock pot with water, add a carrot or two, celery and onion. Cook on low for 24 hours. I added a good amount of water to be sure to have enough to cook 24 hours. Don't want to cook my crock dry. I also added 1/4 C vinegar, which you may not want to. At least until we discover for sure what is going on.

That is just crazy! I have definitely heard of using vinegar, I usually forget though... I can't imagine the amount of calcium you'd get!
