Callie, I think my low temps probably are related to poor nourishment. I have never been a good vegetable eater (except maybe 20 years ago when I did Weight Watchers and you had to count your breads, fruits, etc. and most vegetables were free.) I'm wondering why the doctor prescribed Armour thyroid at the same time he told me to eat like a cave man. (btw, tomorrow I will be eating like an Italian cave man. : ) He's supposedly a holistic doctor. I would have expected him to implement the dietary changes first--especially since I don't have severe hypothyroid symptoms.

I found this website with some helpful information. There's a quiz to see if your symptoms are hypothyroid, adrenal, or a mixture. There are also charts for recording temperatures, and some other good stuff.

Linda, thanks for sharing that site. I started to take my temps yesterday and this will be really helpful. I feel like gaining optimum health is like a puzzle and I'm finding one piece at a time that hopefully will bring me to that place. It has been two years now since an outbreak of hives and disillusionment with the medical establishment set me on a path to take responsibility for my own health. What a journey, and everyone here on the forums has played a huge part in my education, for which I am so grateful. I so appreciate Teresa providing this for us.

    Linda,

They did the whole thyroid battery of tests, but I don't know which one showed the results or what they were. We were on our anniversary when I got the call, so I just picked up the selenium my doctor told me to take and will talk more with him at my January appointment. I think that there is a way that they interpret the whole of the tests and not just one single test.

So, now I am back to do I need more carbs? I just started the South Beach diet with fewer carbs (4 per day). Sigh.

Calgirl, You said you ate a lot of carbs to get your temps up and feel better? What is a lot of carbs per day to you?

    Blessings,
    Angie

Hehe angie the biggest point of this approach is to kick dieting in the butt and heal the body so it regulates appetite. So i dont really count the carbs (have you been able to access the free ebook on rrarf? it will tell you the science behind it and how to go about it- its one of the most fascinating things i have read). I get a big bowl of jasmin rice with some ground beef and a tablespoon of coconut oil and add some seasoning liks turmeric curry and salt and mix it all up. And I eat until i do not desire anymore. When i first started i intentionally ate beyond appetite which is a part of the rrarf concept of refeeding and healing the body with as much good nutrition as one can. My weight stayed stable but my temps jumped up quickly and my appetite started dropping. Honestly i can say i just stopped caring about sugar because i was full of good food. I also use sweet potatoes. Please read the book though i can tell you without the proper knowledge it will be difficult to get motivated to make this a total life change and really restore metabolic function to your body. Diets make you fat. period. Restriction results in less muscle mass, more cravings, lowered serotonin production, lowered temps and thyroid hormone, and increased appetite. The reason people dont succeed on diets is not lack of willpower-its because diets screw the body over time til your body is just crying out for good nutrition. Most of us are so chronically undernourished that the ideas of 1)eating to give the body as much nutrtion as it needs 2)resting to heal and 3)not exercising excessively
sounds foreign and scary. But just think if you were a car- if you watered down the gas, stopped recplacing the oil and tried to drive the car cross country several times on the watered down fuel would you expect it to work? Yet we expect that we will be leaner and fitter and happier over time with a new diet- when we are lacking nutrition to build hormones (which regulate fat loss), build muscle (which maintains metabolism) and to create brain chemicals that keep us happy and not depressed (which just leads to bingeing when our moods drop). It's all about eating the food- Lani says on her site to "be a good animal." lions and tigers are out there being active when they need to be, eating as much as they want, and resting when needed. we can do it too!! EAT THE FOOD

Callie, I understand what you are saying. I will say, though, that since we took grains and starches out of our "diet", I actually have felt better. Now I will say that I think it is time to add starches back in. We are doing this for health reasons, due to my dds' leaky gut issues (and finding many of us had issues as well!)

However, I do believe there is a lot of truth and wisdom in what you are sharing--not negating that a bit! I am totally with you on "dieting" to lose "weight". As I said, the only reason we did this is for gut healing, but the idea is you heal and slowly add things back in--just not the processed and sugary junk!

One thing I found is since I cut grains I had to up my fats to satisfy me. I thought I was doing okay on Schwarzbein, but realized I was still not eating enough fat. And as we know, good fats are so nourishing for the hormones, too! I hope to check that out even more, but it will probably not get full attention until after certs!

Please continue to share your experiences and what you've gleaned! Thank you!

those are great points Trisch I always get so much info from your posts. And I hear you on the feeling better with cutting out grains- I still am i strong believer that modern day gluten is really inflammatory for the body. With what i have been learning with all this it raised questions for me about whether my sensitivities would disappear if my thyroid and metabolism went up. and I have found this to be true- i used to get serious puffy face and be knocked oout until 5pm the next day if i ate even the slightest bit of wheat or gluten, now that now longer happens. However its not something i eat on a daily basis/ I also think candida plays into sensitivities- i started addressing candida with Coconut oil, aklalinization and mms (which kills anything fungal viral or parasitic) and immediately noticed i could eat junk without feeling awful and getting all types of symptoms. the point with 180 degree health is get such a healthy hardy system that anything can be eaten, even if you choose to focus on healthier choices. for me this is just what i need because i was anorexic in HS and have spent the last 8 years in some form of deprivation or another which led me to have sensitivities to about 30 different substances and foods. it is nice to feel like i dont have to be nervous about eating hoping to not feel knocked out afterward. Although HFCS i avoid like the plague it makes me feel terrible!

Oh and yes the good fats are so important- i love getting lots of coconut oil and fats from meat. glad to hear you have noticed a difference with gaps

I totally agree! One of my dds with the leaky gut can now eat gluten once in awhile--that was totally unheard of for over a year before GAPS! The other one is having a slower response to all this, but there are some emotional issues we are dealing with, too.

I actually think maybe my adrenal dip back in October was my body's way of saying it needed more starches. I actually feel a little better since "cheating" more with Christmas! LOL! Not the sugar part, though! But I am planning on adding some starches daily, in small amounts, and see how I do. I love the concept of GAPS, and know it works differently for different people, depending on the desired results, but I also know enough to know we need to listen to our bodies at certain points.

Thank you again for bringing this to the forum! I have learned SO MUCH from all you wonderful ladies! HUGS!

This is my goal... to have a healthy, hardy system! I'm getting there. I just realized the other day that it has been a while since I had even one hive welt, and the worst outbreaks have been gone for months and months. It has also been a while since I felt a need to use my Neti pot. I still have congestion to some degree but it's much less than in years past and I've been able to use saline spray and occasionally Sinus Buster to keep my sinuses open. Oh, and I don't want to forget that I'm now eating foods that I wouldn't touch before because I would be guaranteed a tummy ache. Little by little, step by step....
