    Smile Benefits of Fermented Sauerkraut!

    Great article about fermented sauerkraut!

    http://www.naturalnews.com/033659_sa..._benefits.html

Just as an aside--through GAPS I've learned that sometimes acid reflux is a problem of too little stomach acid vs. too much! That has proven true in our 2 dds with gut issues. My 14 yodd has received some benefits from this way of eating, but still had some chest heaviness (her sign of acid reflux--she doesn't have hardly any of the other "usual" signs!).

By eating just a TB or so of fermented sauerkraut, about 15 minutes before eating, it is much better!

GREAT stuff! (Just make sure it's truly fermented, not just mixed with vinegar and sugar!)

There are other fermented veggies that are good, too!

You should read Nourishing Traditions- the whole first chapter is on the benefit of fermented food in the gut. Such interesting reading!!!

Trisch--you've mentioned that you're hypothyroid. So am I. I've read that cabbage and other cruciferous vegetables suppress thyroid function. I've been transitioning onto the GAPS diet, but haven't incorporated fermented sauerkraut yet. I'm wondering if in your GAPS research, you've seen anything that tells how much sauerkraut one can eat, if any, before it affects your thyroid. How much are you eating? Have you noticed any changes with regards to your thyroid?

Thank you for all the information you've shared regarding GAPS! I've been gluten free (due to Celiac Disease) for 6 years and am hoping that following GAPS will eliminate my remaining symptoms. Your family's story on the GAPS thread inspired me to give it a try.

Trish, do you make your own fermented sauerkraut and other veggies? Do you have a recipe or know of one?
