    Question Homemade Kefer

    Hi!!
My mom has started making her own Kefer with grains and was wondering if other people have had success making their own too? What do you use it for? We usually use it in shakes, it also makes great biscuits too.......YUM!! But is there a "special" way you use it?? Would love to learn more about the benefits too......... Really, whatever you know that has helped you, I would love to know also!!!!

    Thanks for any help!!

I've only recently started looking into this. I bought some at the HFS to make sure I like it, and now I'm planning to make my own. So far I've only used the store-bought kind in my smoothies and on berries in place of yogurt. She's making milk kefir, right? There's also a water kefir that I'm still planning to make, but I've been side-tracked with other things and haven't gotten my act together to be able to make it. There has been some discussion of it on another thread, maybe Trisch's GAPS thread, not sure.

Abbie, my dds have made kefir (although we just use the store kefir vs. the grains for now). We like to blend up fruit (strawberry or peach are favorites!) and just a little honey for sweetener and drink it as a snack! It's very good for you!

We use the store kefir as a starter, like you do yogurt (1/4 cup per batch, I think). I just didn't get the hang of the grains for some reason. And I kept trying to kill them!

Ours is more of a thick drinkable yogurt consistency. Very yummy!

Abbie, I'm new to kefir making too. I'm supposed to be getting some grains from someone this week to make water kefir. Here is a site that will tell you about anything you could possibly wonder about kefir http://users.sa.chariot.net.au/~dna/kefirpage.html. Enjoy!

LOL I've killed my grains too many times to count. This last time my mom and I were out of town so my dad saw the milk on the counter and put it back in the fridge! Yep, killed them AGAIN! I told my pastor wife ( who also makes kefir) about it and she offered to "babysit" them next time we're out of town!
