    Question Nascent Iodine?

Okay, anyone have any thoughts on this? In one of those internet scavenger hunts, where you're trying to find that website you forgot to bookmark , I came across this website with nascent iodine:

    http://www.magneticclay.com/store/na...plement-1.aspx

I got there through a biodentistry site! LOL! He had recommended the mercury detox clay bath ( here: http://www.magneticclay.com/store/ma...mercury-2.aspx ) and I saw the iodine.

This was interesting as I was wondering about talking to my midwife about upping my Armour thyroid, but I also wondered about boosting/feeding the thyroid a different way. Past experience is I start getting the signs of too much thyroid if I up it (I'm on 30 mg now). But I know I have some issues still (miscarriage last fall, hair breakage, low energy although much better with T-Tapp!).

There is always a WEALTH of knowledge on this forum, so I thought I would tap into it!

    TIA!

Do you mean adding iodine instead of adding Armour thyroid? My doctor has me on Levoxyl and T3 (a different ratio from what the Armour product has) but also has me on an iodine supplement which also has a couple of other things in it. I think it is selenium and zinc, something like that. I get it from the compounding pharmacy, prescribed. He also has me on iron. All of this is to support the thyroid. He raised my thyroid dose after a few months, but brought it back down again. Oh, yes, he's also having me take Vit. D. I'm really glad he is interested in supplementing things you need to keep the thyroid healthy rather than just giving me more thyroid. He monitors me with blood tests every 3-4 months (expensive, but at least he is watching the effects of what we are trying instead of just throwing stuff at me.) He encourages epsom salt baths for detoxing undesirable minerals, so I just got some of Joan's magnesium oil. I can't wait to tell him about that.

What exactly is nascent iodine? How is it different from other forms?

    Nancy

I take Wellness Resources Iosol Iodine by Byron Richards (Mastering Leptin). I was taking it just to see how my body responded and had been using 3 drops per day in my water for a few months, then had my L.Ac. muscle test me. When he did, my body indicated that it wanted 6 drops per day, so that's what I'm doing now. I do believe I have some secondary thyroid issues. I am also taking the Wellness Resources Thyroid Helper supp. which, in addition to supporting the thyroid, helps the liver to convert T4 to T3, and is beneficial even if you are on thyroid medication.

You can read about it at www.wellnessresources.com, if you're interested.

Have you tried adding kelp to your diet? I found that it makes a difference for me.

My sister told me to buy the cheap iodine in the drug store. She told me to paint my arm and if it disappeared in a day then I needed iodine. I do not know if it is true but it is cheap and convenient.

Do check out what kind of iodine you get because some is usable and some is not. I wish I could remember what kind she told me to get but I am having a brain fart. I do know it was like $26 in the hfs for a bottle but it would last a really long time.

I used to take kelp until I read something from Byron Richards about how it can actually irritate the thyroid and since that's what I was mainly taking it for, I decided to try the Iosol.

Christiane Northrup has info in Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom about doing the iodine patch test.

You can go read about it on his website, Nikki. It's probably in the literature on Iosol. He does always explain in great depth why he uses a particular form of every nutrient. It's kinda pricey, but it does last forever. I've been using this since the beginning of September and I think the bottle's only about half gone (of course, now I'm using twice as much.....)

    Sorry been too busy lately!

I did the iodine on the thigh test by default--one year when we dipped the baby goats' cords in iodine, some got through my denim jumper and onto my inner thigh. I saw it when I showered. The next day, I noticed it was almost gone! (I showered again that next morning!) I remembered someone telling me that, too, Nikki! It was later that year my midwife put me on Armour! My tests come back "normal", but my mom was within low normal range and needed extra. I know there are different tests now, but my midwife went by my preovulatory temps and some of my other symptoms.

I, too, saw very little improvement with kelp.

I think on the website it might tell the difference between nascent iodine and other forms. I need to do a little more research on it, too. Just didn't know if anyone had any experience with it!

Moyne, thanks for your input! I have wondered about supporting the thyroid, too. Especially since the last time we tried to up it, it made me jittery. (btw--how do you pronounce your name? I always hate to be thinking wrongly when I say people's names in my mind! )

Nancy, thanks for sharing what your dr. is doing, too.

I appreciate your input, ladies! Thanks! I'll let you know if I decide to use this and if it helps. Like I said, I'm going to do a bit more research. I confess since the whooping cough back in Jan/Feb, I'm kind of researched out! (bleh!)

In my research, I'm finding it's fairly common with doctors who know anything about the subject to prescribe Armour based on the symptoms rather than labwork, since the labwork can be so misleading. Also, many agree that the "normal range" they cite is just not correct and many people who test within the norm are actually low and symptomatic. It may also be a case of different people having different levels that are normal for THEM and the "ranges" are not applicable. I just spoke to a woman the other day (who works for one of those doctors) whose labwork was considered "perfect" but she felt awful. She's now doing great on the appropriate amount of Armour for her. You might also be one of the people who does better on compounded bioidentical T4 and T3, or just T3.

Wellness Resources also has a "Thyroid Helper" supplement which, among other things, helps the liver convert T4 to T3.

Oh, and my name rhymes with "coin".
