    Default Pain on left side of my left calf

    I just started doing SATI this week. Before I had only done BWO+. About half way through the workout, especially during and after the side to side steps, I start getting a pain in the left side of my lower left calf. The area right above the ankle. It seems to be this way because I am putting my weight on the outside of my foot. The pain is sort of a tightness and I can usually continue through it though sometimes I need to stop and just shake that foot out. I've gotten this during BWO+ before, usually half way through the T-Tapp Twist, but it is not as bad as with SATI.

    My question is...is this normal? Could I be doing something wrong with my form? Am I just not strong enough yet to put the weight on the outside of my foot?

    Maybe the foot on that side has a tendency to go out like a "duck" as Teresa says. Or maybe you are shifting your weight so much that your ankle on that side is bending when it should be straight.

    When you're walking do you focus on pushing off with the little toes without pressure on the big toe?


    Maybe a Trainer could chime in.

    Thanks, Casey. I do indeed focus on pushing off with my little toes and not my big toe. But I think sometimes in my focus to get this right, I possibly push off with the whole outside of my foot and am probably letting my ankle bend. I definitely guard against letting the front of my feet sweep out, so I don't think I'm walking like a duck!

    First, I totally love your forum name!

    Second, I have a bad habit of rolling out *too* far and straining the muscles supporting my ankle. My problem is instead of just taking weight off the big toe, I tend to hold the ball joint *and* toe aloft completely... this leads to me doing moves with too much pressure on the small bones of my feet. I'm not a trainer, but it helps me to picture my arch raised but the ball joint touching lightly.... I'm sure that would be pretty tough with SATI, but maybe it helps?

    Thanks all for the replies. Throughout the last week, I've focused more on not over-focusing on using the outside of my foot instead of my big toe, if that makes sense. I think in my over-focus on using the little toes, I was letting my ankle buckle and using the entire outside of my foot. So far, the pain has not come back at all and I don't think I'm using my big toe all that much. Still, using my little toes to step off feels really difficult--not straining difficult, but coordination difficult.

    It does take some time to get used to the T-Tapp way of walking with NBT, KLT, etc. Just keep on working on it and eventually it will be like second nature. Good luck!
