Privacy??

My parent looked this up. You have to pay to access the exact information on anyone you want to know about. When you search this you only get the town. If you want to maintain your privacy, you have to pay these people a one-time charge of $4.95, but frankly, I am afraid to give them a credit-card number. If they are vile enough to divulge your location, what will they do when they access your credit card?

"Google has implemented a new feature which enables you to type a telephone number into the search bar and hit enter and you will be given the person's name and address (I checked this out & it came up with my name & address AND a map showing where my house was). If you then hit MapQuest, you will get a map to the person's house. Everyone should be aware of this!

If a child gives out his/her phone number, or if you give out your number, someone can now look it up to find out where he/she lives/you live. The safety issues are obvious, and alarming.

Note that you can have your phone number removed or blocked. As I said, I typed in my number and it came up along with the map and directions straight to my house. It is quite scary."

When at our public library one of their workers at the computer asked a young girl standing at the counter (with a line of MEN behind her) to verify her phone number and address!

Pamela being Pamela I immediately spoke up and told him this was not appropriate and to look behind her.

Some of the men there are fathers and they were angry too, but this guy is not the sharpest tool in the shed and looked totally baffled and the little girl out of 'good manners' had already giver her phone number out before I could stop her.

I spoke to the head librarian about it and emailed the board later on and they have since stopped doing this.

Now, knowing this google access, it really is very sobering.

I inputted 6 numbers associated with us and got nothing... But I did for the inlaws in the same town and for my grown children living out of state... Wonder what the difference is, it is scary though....

Sometimes it retrieves a number and sometimes it doesn't. If your number is found, you can click on your name and it'll take you to a screen where you can request it be removed from the database. This isn't specific to Google.com or Yahoo.com. There are so many webpages (ie: web phone pages like Anywho.com, etc) that if someone really wanted to find you--it wouldn't be hard.

The only way to get around it is to have an unlisted number since these databases are generated using that info.

Edited to add: to search you can use this format: 111-222-3456 (include the dashes)

All that these search engines do is access the information provided to your phone company. For instance, if your provider is Qwest, and you allow your address to be printed with your phone number, it will also show up online (and therefore on a google search).

Our home number, for instance, is with Vonage, and it doesn't show up at all. Cell numbers don't normally show either, unless you've used it to advertise somewhere along the way (my old one still gets a hit from back in my real estate days).
