    Default ETL vs MM/GM

    Hello Ladies,

I need to lose about 50lbs and am trying to figure out what to do. I love the ideas behind ETL but I'm not sure I could be that strict with my eating. I'm not sure how I would follow it when we go out. I also like GM/MM but I pretty much eat that way any way (with a bit of tweeking it would be GM/MM). I don't lose weight easily.

I'm doing the Weekend to end breast cancer (a 60km walk to raise money for breast cancer research) in a couple of weeks so I'm not going to make any huge changes right now but want to figure out what to do for the end of the summer and fall. I think I'm the only person on the planet who can walk 60kms in two days and not lose any weight. Last year I lost nothing! Even with all the training.

    Have a fabulous day!

I don't know anything about ETL, although there are previous threads about it. But to me, anything that is strict is suspect! Some of these "programs" seem so convoluted to me that it just doesn't make sense. Have you read any of the Schwarzbein books? It makes a lot of sense because it's balanced and doesn't go against the natural plan of things, if you know what I mean? I don't think God (or whatever you believe in) created all these wonderful whole foods for us to only eat a certain few, in crazy combinations, or need "engineered" foods to be healthy.

Eat to Live is all about eating real foods none of the processed junk. There is great detail as to why dairy and meat should be taken out of your way of eating...that being said he does give ideas of how to eat with meat as well. I would encourage you to read the book it is a great book and there are no crazy combinations or engineered foods to eat. I also agree the Schwartzbine written book is written well and makes a lot of sense. I've read them both and they are both outstanding. As much as I wish I could say I have followed Eat to Live strictly I have not; however, I have followed some of his suggestions and feel better for it. Again, read the book since you like Schwartzbine you may get a lot out of reading Eat to Live.

Eat to Live is a great book, the ideas behind it are sound for the most part, I think. That being said, I don't follow it as much as I wish I did, but when I was closer to its guidelines than I am now a ton of symptoms I had disappeared. As soon as any of them start appearing again, I try to go back to those guidelines, however, I would do well to stick to them more consistently, I'm sure. It's one of the first books on eating to lose weight that really made sense to me and was not convoluted but very straightforward and backed with a lot of research. I read the Schwarzbein book too and thought it made good points. The thing with Eat to Live is that it is mostly a book about eating for good health, to reverse disease and keep others from forming than it is about losing weight. A side effect though is weight loss. It is extremely educational and a great companion book to it is The China Study. I love the GM/MM principle, but for me a little MM usually ends up equaling a lot of MM because once I start, it's all over but the shoutin' baby!!!! Good luck, Satara, in whatever you decide to do.

    Hello Ladies,

Thanks for your input. I think ETL makes a lot of sense but I don't think I could follow it long term. It's hard to do with little kids I don't want to be making separate meals for everyone but I don't see my boys (3&6yrs) eating a that many veggies.

GM/MM makes sense too but I too tend to go overboard with the MM stuff, it's like the flood gates open and the junk starts flowing in .

What is the idea behind the Schwartzbine book?

I have requested a copy of the china study and am waiting for it to come in to the library.

Yup, I know it's not just eating veggies. There are some great recipes in Disease proof your child, my son's favorite dinner is Dr furman's bean burgers. The grain free cookie recipes didn't go over well.

It is really hard to follow when the kids go over to other people's houses. When I tell people my kids don't eat dairy they look at me like I'm some sort of alien. I need to find a balance that will work for myself and my family.

Well, good luck to you, Satara. I know all about finding balances with the food! I don't 100% agree with his ideas about meat and also grain. I mill my own flour and believe that to be a very nutritious food when kept intact with all it's God given vitamins! We still have a little meat, but I watch the type I serve and the amount. I try to make all my goodies with the good flour and sucanat or sucanat with honey as a sweetener. It's hard when you're so used to eating a certain way. The health benefits of eating more veggies and less processed is what has convinced me though.

Take care and best wishes to you, kiddo![:X]

    Jean
