ML help for my mom!
My mom and I are trying this WOE together. She really wants to do it, but she's having some difficulties already. Many years ago, my mom got a stomach staple surgery.
[stapling the upper stomach, to create a small pouch, about the size of your thumb, into which food flows after it is swallowed. The outlet of this pouch is restricted by a band of synthetic mesh, which slows its emptying, so that the person having it feels full after only a few bites of food.]
Her doctor recommended it
(they don't anymore) because she was morbidly overweight. It turned out to be just another weight loss tactic that didn't work in the end because people never feel satisfied, just full, so they find ways around it to feel satisfied. It's reversible but very very costly. Insurance covered the intial surgery but won't conver reversing it.
Anyway, she's having problems with ML because she can't eat very much at a time and isn't able to sustain until the next meal 5 hours later. Also, she's been on a 1000 calorie/day diet for a long time and isn't sure she wants to change that. Today, she ate the kind of food she would normally eat, only more spaced out, and she only ate 500 calories [:0]because she's used to grazing (but healthily) all day. Exmple, for lunch, she ate half of a whole wheat pita, some salad and 2 tbsp of hummus. That was all she could get down!
ANY ideas??????

You know, I think someone in a very early ML thread actually had had a consult with Byron Richards. I am at work so don't have my book with me, but it may have given a way to contact him in the book.
Your Mom definitely needs to take care with getting enough nutrients in with the surgery she has had.
I will see if I can find the thread with the consult info in it.

Do you have the ML book? Is there perhaps something in there regarding situations like this?
P-L-A-Y Come on, push it. You can do it.
Just tapp already, would ya?!?

I will check in my book to see if I see anything about a situation like this this evening. Here is the # where you can contact them for questions from their website:

Thanks so much for the posts ladies!
My book hasn't arrived yet, I'm still waiting for it. I may just have to call the ML people directly. Thanks for the phone number. L'Oreal, you think Teresa might have some ideas about this? Does she support the ML woe?
My mom has been doing really well the past year with a personal trainer and doing the glycemic index diet. She's lost 40lbs. But she's been stuck and hasn't lost anything in the past 4 months. She's hoping that ML might budge things. I've been trying to convince her to try T-tapp, but so far all she's been willing to try is skin brushing, which she really likes!
Anyway thanks again for the input and support, I love T-tapp forums!

I looked for my book. It must be out in my car. I had it in my bag in there to read when we went somewhere a while back. And it is pouring rain here. I will try to look at it tomorrow sometime for you. I think your best bet would be to call the 1-800 and ask for their suggestions.

HI all. I talked to the wellness resource people and they were very helpful. Of course they tried to sell me supplements, but they did recommend that my mom have a consultation with Byron Richards because her case is so unique.
She's been trying so hard to do this woe. She's been managing the best she can. The difficulty about this stupid stomach staple is that it's actually more like a funnel shape. So she has to be careful about what she eats because if some food gets stuck in the funnel, then everything eaten after that backs up and my mom ends up vomitting it all back up and then of course she's list her meal and is hungry again! That's why grazing all day has been her normal woe because she can eat little bits at a time to make sure it all goes down well, and if it doesn't, then she hasn't lost that much food. Luckily, protein shakes and other liquids go down very well, but she can't live on shakes!
BTW, does Dr. Richards recommend a certain amount of daily protein intake in his book???
Thanks everyone for all your support!

Hi! I am glad that you called. I hope that your mom can talk with Byron about this and get some help. I don't remember it saying that you have to have a certain amount of protein. But I will check my book if I find it! lol

Roughly half your weight, same with water. If you weigh 200 pounds you need 100 ounces of water, 100 grams of protein.
I think this is Covert Bailey's calculator....
How to Calculate Your Protein Needs:
1. Weight in pounds divided by 2.2 = weight in kg
2. Weight in kg x 0.8 to 1.8 gm/kg = protein gm.
Use a lower number if you are in good health and are sedentary. Use a higher number (between 1 and 1.8) if you are under stress, are pregnant, are recovering from an illness, or if you are involved in consistent and intense weight or endurance training.
Example: 154 lb male who is a regular exerciser and lifts weights
154 lbs/2.2 = 70kg
70kg x 1.5 = 105 gm protein/day

If your Mom does have the consult I'd be very interested to hear what the Dr says. My Mom has also had her stomach stapled and later had gastric bypass. She is in a similar situation in that she can't go 5 hours between eating.
I have the ML book and he says nothing about it other than "don't do it" so that's not terribly helpful.
My Mom has found that taking 2oz of Mangosteen juice every day really helps keep her blood sugar stable and her eating more balanced. It's been very useful for her.
Can your Mom go 4 hours between meals? He recommends 5 but says if you can't do it then do 4. I know that my Mom has an easier time with the 4 hours. Also, she gave up gluten about 2 years ago and that helps her out a lot with her eating. She has difficulty with digesting meat and some veggies so she's very careful about what she eats. She's never been able to lose the weight though.
