Hormonal Balance Important for Weight Loss and/or Management

September 20, 1999

One of the reasons for such quick results when doing the T-Tapp Total Workout is because it balances the body physiologically. Its comprehensive, compound muscle movements are designed to rebuild and balance the body's biochemistry, biomechanics, and hormones. That’s why I named it the T-Tapp Total Workout. Most people approach exercise as a way to burn calories and fat, but I have always maintained an interest in health/wellness understanding how the body works physiologically. When the body is in balance, weight comes off so much easier. Last week I explained how toxins create imbalance, so this week I want to bring to your attention how imbalanced hormones can make you fat.

Eating too many carbohydrates and not enough protein offsets the delicate balance between two essential hormones - Insulin and Glucagon. Imbalance can create an insulin overload that leads to weight gain, hypertension and, eventually, heart disease and diabetes. I personally advocate a 55% carbohydrate, 30% protein and 15% fats, eating plan to help stimulate your body to burn fat better. Even John Hopkins clinical studies verify the need for the female body to have 55% carbohydrates in order to maintain bone density (that's another newsletter topic). So don't think that if protein is good, more is better (i.e.: don't follow an all protein no carb diet!!). Remember the body needs the balance of all three nutrients - Carbohydrates, Protein, and Fat.

Insulin and glucagon, your fat-storage and fat-burning hormones, work to keep you thin when they're balanced.

INSULIN - the fat-storage hormone is the hormone responsible for shuttling glucose out of the bloodstream and into the body's cells for storage as fat. Elevated blood-glucose levels stimulate the release of insulin by the pancreas. Since the digestive system easily breaks down "simple" or "man-made" carbohydrates into glucose, high-carb consumption stimulates rapid release of this fat-storing hormone, facilitating fat-cell expansion and production.

GLUCAGON - the fat-burning hormone is sometimes referred to as the "fasting hormone" because it's the hormone responsible for accessing stored energy in fat cells and releasing it into the bloodstream. Glucagon is released whenever blood sugar levels fall or whenever we eat protein. When glucagon and insulin levels are balanced, any energy stored by insulin is quickly retrieved and burned by glucagon.

How imbalanced hormones make you fat. When insulin is in the blood stream, glucagon is not. A diet containing too many carbs keeps blood sugar levels high and forces the pancreas to keep producing insulin. More insulin in the blood means less fat gets burned because less glucagon is produced. Plus, insulin prevents fat breakdown even further by inhibiting the activity of lipase, the enzyme that breaks down fats in the digestive system. In other words, carbs can actually encourage your body to store fat and prevent your body from burning it off. Eventually, cells build resistance to the constantly circulating insulin, and your pancreas has to work overtime to produce a higher dosage the cells can respond to. According to the latest research, your pancreas gradually wears out - thus leading to diabetes.

When you rebuild your internal muscle mass with the T-Tapp Total Workout, your body will have a higher resting rate of glucose utilization (thus a higher metabolic rate). To keep blood glucose balance, you can take my Premium Blended Alfalfa (it's plant protein). Whenever I am having a high carbohydrate meal (i.e.: pasta with salad, bread, and a glass of wine) I automatically take a couple of my Premium Blended Alfalfa at the beginning of the meal to offset the extra glucose at blood level. Whenever I have an afternoon snack attack for sugar, I make sure to have some raw almonds at the same time (or my Premium Blended Alfalfa). This is also why I will eat a half of a peanut butter sandwich with jam on 12 grain bread (by Arnold at the grocery store) at 3:30 pm. Just think balance with all foods in moderation. Don't "diet" just think about what you are eating.

Do you feel hungry most of the time? Sufferers of insulin-resistance rarely feel "satisfied", because the constantly circulating insulin keeps their blood sugar low.

Do you consume less than 15% of your calories from fat? You need fat-even when you are dieting. Fat slows digestion, preventing the rapid release of glucose in the bloodstream that boosts insulin activity.

Do you have a family history of diabetes? Type II diabetes is an end result of pancreatic distress and insulin resistance.

Are you currently overweight or obese? Do you have a family history of overweight/obesity? Studies show that overweight and obese individuals have higher levels of insulin circulating in their bloodstream.

Do you frequently suffer from headaches? They may be created by irregular blood-glucose levels, indicating an insulin imbalance.

Do you feel irritable or crabby before you eat? These feelings may indicate low blood sugar prior to eating, a sign of insulin over-activity.

Do you CRAVE SUGAR on a regular basis? This is a classic sign of insulin-resistance.

If you answered yes to three or more of the above questions, you're probably at risk for hormone imbalance. A blood test can tell you for sure but you can help your body repair itself with proper balance of nutrients... and start moving. Do a T-Tapp "4 Day Boot Camp" to kick start your way to a better body and brush every day with the CRT Skin Tightening System. Last of all, you can help your body maintain lower glucose levels with the Pyruvyl Glycine spray. I sometimes call it the "Carbohydrate Cheat Spray" because it stimulates muscle tissue to burn glucose even without exercise. So when I have higher carbohydrate consumption days (like during the holidays!) I just make sure to spray 12-16 times during the day. And when you combine Pyruvyl Glycine with exercise, it works even better - so spray before, during and after your workout. Special this week - 25% discount on the Pyruvyl Glycine spray (Regular price $39.95 - only $30.00 with free shipping). Call 1-800-342-0717 to get special discount and free shipping.

Congratulations to the September 15th T-Tapp contest winner: Rachael Bradford from Maine! Rachel is the lucky winner to receive a private, one-on-one consultation with Teresa Tapp (worth over $300) to customize her nutritional and fitness needs based on her personal profile. T-Tapp's unique method of utilizing a person' blood type, anatomical structure, and genetic/ethnic heritage (i.e.: "personal profile") makes it easier to win the weight loss war.

Update on last contest winner - Jennifer Cooper, Florida - age 29, had just completed the EAS "3 Months to a Better Body" Program by Bill Phillips when she won the T-Tapp Consultation Contest. For those of you not familiar with the EAS program, it is a very specific, regimen that combines weight training and aerobics with the supervision of a trainer/nutritionist along with taking the EAS supplements. With the "EAS 3 month program", Jennifer lost 6 lbs of fat & gained 21 pounds of muscle (she went from 19% body fat to 15%), but she wasn't happy. Let me share her personal testimonial…

"Even though I had success with the EAS program, my hips and buns never slimmed down, so it was discouraging. I figured that big hips just run in my family so I'll just have to live with it. I am so glad I won the free consultation with Teresa; otherwise I might not have gotten up the courage to spend more money on a risk. Even though there was no obligation to buy anything, I decided that I wanted to try the T-Tapp Total System. Fortunately the money was well spent. I look better from behind in less than 2 weeks using the T-Tapp System that I did at the end of the "EAS 3 month" program lifting weights 3-4 times a week and doing aerobics about 4 times a week before that. Teresa's information on how to eat, what to eat, and supplement suggestions for my blood type, body type and genetics seemed to make a difference. She even explained how to use machines for my body type to get better results when I weight train so I wouldn't get bulky. Even though my scale did not show any difference in body weight, I measured myself at the end of two weeks doing the T-Tapp Workout and to my amazement I had lost 1/2 inch off my waist, 1/2 inch off my hips, and 1/2 inches off each thigh! I couldn't believe it!"

Thanks Jennifer for letting me share your success story. I am happy for you! Everyone deserves to be the best they can be. I only help people to achieve their goals - whatever they may be. I just want to point out that anyone with 15% body fat is NOT FAT! Even 19% is considered low, so that 1/2-inch loss off each thigh, hips and waist was not fat loss, but muscles regaining stronger, shorter fibers. Those shorter fibers enabled your muscles to be "girdles" - to tighten and tone your waist, hips (including the butt) and thighs. Aerobics and/or weight training can't do that. What you learn from the T-Tapp Workout will make all other workouts more effective. T-Tapp with Tae Bo or weight training you'll never be bulky again!

Best wishes for everyone's health and happiness!
