Watch out for Fructose and Evening Carbohydrates
August 9, 1999
This week is the final countdown for the October issue of Women’s Fitness. I think all of you will enjoy the Back Pain Relief program featured as well as the new “Shared Secrets” idea, which covers similar information as what comes through this newsletter. I am also being considered as a co-host for the national Fox TV show called “Forever Young” with host Bill Frank. Has anyone seen this show? I value your input as I am considering being a regular feature to this once a week show. Please email me if you have seen the show and what you think. Thanks!
Thought you would like to hear some updates on previous tips… some of you have sent me great information and I want to share the info with all.
First of all, the “Fruit of the Earth” company who makes the aloe gel also makes an Aloe Vera skin lotion called “Skin Care”. This lotion is really good! The aloe gel does help your body rebuild collagen, but it doesn’t replace lotion. “Skin Care” lotion is an extra dry formula. Put it on after the aloe gel “dries”. I keep a sample bottle in my care to use on my elbows and hands throughout the day. The 16 ounce bottle is bright blue with lime green top.
After the milk article, I received many emails regarding hormones in beef, chicken, eggs and cheese. Yes, organic and hormone free products available with all of these foods. Right now the EU (European Union) won’t allow import of our beef and dairy. It makes you wonder doesn’t it? If you are fortunate enough to live near a farmer or an Amish community, you can get fresh, free-range chickens, eggs, milk and cheese (even sour cream, yogurt, ice cream and whip crème) at good prices. Guess there is some truth to the old saying that those who live in the country are healthier - and to think that I just thought that it was due to fresh air! Concerning hormone and antibiotic free meat - most grocery stores carry beef and chicken labeled as such. Be an educated consumer and ask for the best! Most grocery stores also carry organic eggs, milk and cheese. I just recently tried organic feta cheese by Stonyfield Farms and it tastes great on my salads and in my morning omelet!
Concerning sugar to fat conversion: Even though sugar is fat free, it is easily converted to fat, especially FRUCTOSE. Dr. Scott Connelly, M.D., director of UCLA’s Connelly Center for Applied Nutrition, says that most of the diet-friendly foods available in meals/snacks could be the main reason for current weight woes. “They’re packed with fructose, a sugar that’s metabolize in a very unusual way,” says Dr. Connelly. “In high doses, it’s turned to fat almost immediately, instead of being burned for energy.” “Surveys show our fructose intake has increased tenfold in the past two decades - and experts say that’s almost certainly one reason our weight problems have skyrocketed too.”
“Forget about fat grams and start scouring labels for fructose,” Dr. Connelly advises. And be prepared for a few shocks: experts say some “healthy” pre-packaged dinners get up to 52% of their calories from fructose! “If fructose is one of the first three ingredients in a food, avoid it,” Dr. Connelly suggests.
Another tip from Dr. Connelly’s research center that I thought you would find interesting is that 75% of us are familiar with the USDA food pyramid, and we’re doing our best to eat the number of fruits, vegetables, grains and proteins it recommends for optimal health. However, surveys also show that we eat 60% of our calories after 4 pm, “and that can spell disaster - especially if you are following the food pyramid,” says Dr. Connelly. “Our insulin levels peak in the evening, and insulin is the key hormone for turning carbohydrates into body fat,” says Dr. Connelly. The USDA recommends up to 11 carb servings a day, but if you are eating lots of carbohydrates in the evening, you could add up to five pounds to your figure within a month. It’s not just what you eat but when you eat it!
Eat most of your calories before dinnertime. “Even if you eat the same number of calories each day, having a larger breakfast and lunch and a smaller even meal can take five pounds off in a month,” says Dr. Connelly. UCLA studies show cutting grain servings in half and replacing them with lean proteins, fruits and vegetables could trim you by 10 pounds in two months. “And eating this way is just as good for you as following the food pyramid, if not more so,” says Dr. Connelly.
The best fruits for weight loss are the lower sugar variations such as apples, grapes, peaches and citrus fruits. Bananas, mangoes and apricots, are so high in sugar, they can make blood sugar levels spike and can trigger cravings. This is why you need to eat some protein/fat at the same time as fruit to help your blood sugar stay balanced. Almonds, nuts, and peanut butter are good with fruit. This is also why I suggest to “eat” your fruit, don’t “drink” it. You can overload on carbohydrates very quickly with fruit juice, so when drinking juice keep the portion small (4-6 ounces) and have some protein. I cringe when I see someone drink a 16 ounce glass of orange juice knowing how the body is converting a lot of it into fat! When thirsty, drink water. THEN have some juice.
Another update: Last week when I spoke about hair management, I didn’t mention that it is wise to follow each shampoo with a cool to cold rinse. My assistant (formally a hair stylist) brought this to my attention on its importance in maintaining a healthy scalp. Needless to say, it really makes the hair shine too. I just assumed that everyone already knew this - along with alternative hair rinses with vinegar and/or chamomile tea. Make sure to brew the whole flowers to get the best benefit (not the tea bags). Once brewed, filter the flowers and store for use.
Last of all, most of you know that color can stimulate the appetite. This is why most of the fast food restaurants are decorated with colors of red, orange, and yellow. But did you know that the color blue could help suppress the appetite? This is why I carry a blue sports bottle of water with me everywhere I go. There are many blue tinted bottles of water at the grocery store, but my health food store carries the brand “Blue bottle” which is bright blue. I just refill it with the filtered water I have from my house. Then every time I drink throughout the day, I know that subliminally I am also helping to satisfy my outrageous appetite. Try it. I think that you’ll see the difference. Besides, most of the time when we feel “hungry” it is usually because our bodies are “thirsty”. So drink before you snack from something blue and if you are trying to lose - get blue dishes (or at least don’t use red, orange or yellow). Now, you understand how Christmas red works against us during the holiday season. That’s ok, just use Pyruvyl Glycine to offset the extra glucose and eat those man-made goodies every other day. Maybe this season you won’t gain the usual 10 lbs like most people! Enjoy the carbs - just fix the “machine”!
Until next week,
