How to Control Chocolate Cravings!

July 5, 1999

Most women love chocolate, and universally we have all had ultimate cravings for this luscious food at some time or other - usually during times of stress or during our monthly cycle. Some people don’t realize that cravings for chocolate result from bio-chemical imbalance. There is a way for you to enjoy chocolate without losing control.

This week’s tip will help you maintain your body’s balance to where you will still enjoy chocolate, but won’t eat everything in sight!

First of all, the reason we feel so good when we consume chocolate is because our body gets a serotonin “high.” This bio-chemical reaction occurs when we consume any simple carbohydrates (candy, cookies, bread, pasta, chocolate, etc.) and the serotonin really makes us feel good. That is why we women love our carbohydrates! Only women understand the phrase “Chocolate is so sensual” or “I’d kill for chocolate” because we’re the ones that have hormonal cycles that create imbalance. Men can’t understand because their biochemistry doesn’t fluctuate like ours. To make matters worse we don’t just fluctuate monthly we fluctuate daily!

A lot of women are aware of serotonin, which I will discuss more on another tip of the week, but are not aware of another reason we specifically crave chocolate. Usually it is due to a magnesium deficiency. Some women crave chocolate more than others (everyone’s bio-chemical make-up is different), but I have found that O and B blood types usually crave it more than A and AB blood types because they can’t get enough nutrients from food consumption (they must supplement).

One of the best supplements I’ve found (and believe me, I think that I have tried them all since I am a major chocoholic) is made by Country Life and it is called Nerve & Osteo Support. This is a calcium/magnesium supplement that has a higher ratio of magnesium to calcium. Usually it is the other way around. The label suggests 3 tablets daily as a dietary supplement, but the way I use the product to suppress chocolate cravings (as well as get my necessary calcium) is to take 2 before bedtime. The week before your cycle, take 2 before bedtime and one in the morning. The week after cycle, take 7 days off without supplementation. I usually see a difference in the chocolate cravings within 7 to 10 days. If I am having a lot of “stress” from work deadlines or just from life in general I still supplement the week after cycle too. Stress really depletes the body of nutrients, especially the B vitamins and the mineral magnesium. This is why women need their chocolate!

Not all nutritional supplements are created equal and one major factor about the Nerve & Osteo Support by Country Life is that you will assimilate the calcium and the magnesium because they have chelating agents blended in equal ratios - complexed with specific free form amino acids and other carriers for optimal mineral transport. In addition, magnesium bound to aspartate or Krebs cycle intermediates (citrate) will help fight off fatigue. Aspartate feeds into the Krebs cycle, the final common pathway for conversion of glucose, fatty acids, and amino acids into chemical energy (ATP). Simply put, magnesium will help keep your energy level higher because your muscle tissue will be able to utilize the glucose (coming from carbohydrates) as fuel rather than storing it or converting it to fat. Keep your machine magnesium balanced and you can eat carbohydrates without weight gain.

Furthermore this product is great for optimal calcium absorption to help build bone density. My personal testimonial confirming this is from when my dentist, Dr. Barnheisel, performed two root canals, 1 year apart. After the first root canal, I started to supplement with Nerve & Osteo Support and when Dr. Barnheisel performed the second root canal, he wore out three drilling bits! My teeth were that much stronger and more dense! He couldn’t believe it, but seeing is believing. I will discuss how to build density on another tip of the week.

The ingredients (for 3 tablets) of Nerve & Osteo Support are as follows:

Magnesium (as magnesium oxide, aspartate, citrate, taurinate, alpha-ketoglutarate) – 1000mg
Calcium (as calcium hydroxyapatite, citrate, aspartate, lysinate, alpha-ketoglutarate) – 600mg
Phosphorus (as calcium hydroxyapatite) – 50mg
Vitamin D (as ergocalciferol) – 100 IU
Iodine (as kelp) – 230 mcg
Betaine (from 100 mg of betaine HCl) – 76mg
Kelp – 50mg
Horsetail (leaf/stem)(from 25 mg of a 2:1 extract) – 50mg

I have already advised some T-Tapp club members about this product (from consultations) and their testimonials are all the same - it works! The only problem is that not all stores carry Country Life’s Nerve & Osteo Support (they have other Country Life Calcium/Magnesium supplements, but they don’t work like their Nerve & Osteo Support blend). So I’ve found a retail store that not only carries Country Life’s Nerve & Osteo Support, but is willing to offer T-Tapp club members 10% discount/ free shipping. Retail price for 180 tablets is $19.30. The Tip of the Week Special is that you receive 20% discount/free shipping through July 30th! You can call “Beyond Fitness” toll free @ 1-888-929-0634. Just be sure to identify yourself as a T-Tapp club member. Then after August 1st “Beyond Fitness” will continue to offer 10% discount/free shipping (international customers have shipping costs) to T-Tapp club members. Their website is www.beyondfitness.com (http://www.beyondfitness.com). They don’t have Nerve & Osteo Support on their shopping cart yet, but you can email your order and they will fill it.

Magnesium is second to potassium in terms of concentration within the body’s cells. Its primary function is enzyme activation. It is critical to many cellular functions, including energy production, protein formation, and cellular replication. The RDA or RDI for magnesium is 350mg for adult males/280mg for adult females. The human body contains approximately 21 to 28 grams of magnesium- 60% is in the bone and the rest is in cells. Although calcium supplementation gets the headlines, magnesium supplementation may be far more important for many people. And besides the many benefits of magnesium (i.e.: clinically proven to lower HDL cholesterol and increase LDL cholesterol, improve insulin action, and improve Fibromyalgia) the main reason I wanted to bring it to your attention is that it will definitely maintain bio-chemical balance for all females to enjoy chocolate without uncontrollable craving consumption. So enjoy chocolate, but eat only the best quality (the cheaper sources have paraffin, which can contribute to cellulite). In my opinion, one of the best quality, best tasting inexpensive chocolates are made by Dove which come in milk chocolate as well as semi-sweet dark (my favorite). Paul Newman’s Organic milk chocolate with toffee pieces in it is good as well, but they also make a semi-sweet chocolate bar.

So until I get back from Europe, enjoy that chocolate and I will taste all the European ones that I can find (hey, it’s a business expense!).

Until next week…
