Beauty Tips & Make-up Tricks from the Modeling World
April 19, 1999
Models travel all the time and basically live in hotel rooms. Ever wonder what they do with all those sample size shampoo and conditioners? Well, they use them! One of the best-kept secrets is to shave legs, bikini area and armpits with crème rinse. You will get a smoother shave with softer skin. Crème rinse helps prevent nicks and those unsightly red bumps too. Any crème rinse works and those hotel samples are convenient and great for travel. Remember to use Fruit of the Earth Aloe Gel after the shave (from previous Tip of the Week). The shampoo samples not only are perfect for bubble baths, but they are good for hand washing delicates (i.e.: pantyhose, lingerie).
It is so important for women (not just models) to keep skin soft and smooth on those age revealing areas of neck, knees, elbows, hands and feet. What’s the secret weapon? Olive oil! Try it and you’ll see the difference! Any brand will work, but don’t spend more for the extra virgin olive oil (it will smell stronger on your skin). Use it on top of the aloe gel for best results. Put gloves or socks over hands and feet for bedtime. During the winter “dry” season I use it on my legs too. Another less “aromatic” choice is Crisco Vegetable Shortening. Crisco is so effective that many dermatologists recommend its use on the face after laser surgery! You can put Crisco into a cosmetic jar and no one will know what it is. Just make sure to use new Crisco, not some can leftover from holiday baking!
Since a lot of models smoke and most drink multiple cups of coffee/tea, they use WhiteBrite teeth whitening spray from Better Body Basics to keep their teeth extra white. BUT…they put it into a purse size, refillable perfume atomizer! These can be purchased at department stores, beauty supply stores, or most drug stores. They can be fancy or plain and range in price from $6.00 to 14 karat gold. Either way, their small, sleek size (.5 oz) definitely adds “class” to the process of whitening teeth. Others will think you are using a breath freshener since WhiteBrite is flavored with peppermint. Smile and spray directly onto teeth. Wait a few seconds before swallowing. What a perfect gift for men who smoke cigars – there are some very attractive “tailored” atomizers. The spray is so effective that cigar smokers see whiter teeth within 4 days!
Since it is important not to use mascara past 6 months (bacteria grows in it) here are some other uses instead of just throwing it away. Brown and/or Black mascara covers gray! For those of us who color our hair to cover gray (something I’ve done since age 20) this trick is great between touchups. Use near scalp by the face, temples, or at hair parts. It also works great as a super “root lift” (those with fine, limp hair know what I’m talking about)! For blonde or red hair use clear mascara instead. Mascara also works well at setting eyebrows and if you’re starting to get some gray hairs in the eyebrow area (like me) don’t pluck them, use mascara or try using permanent magic marker. I put a 3”x5” index card under the “hair” and use a black “Sharpie” marker to color it. As crazy as it sounds, it works! Men can use it on facial hair too.
A trick to keep mascara smudge free and from running into the under eye area is to use loose powder after using waterproof mascara. Use an eye shadow brush or Q-tip, dip into powder and then brush along tips of bottom eyelashes and outer corner of upper lashes. If you have thin lashes, use powder before and after.
A trick to give the face a “lift” is to use concealer and/or light matte eye shadow on center of eyelid, upper outer 1/3 of the eyebrow, inner corner of eye to nose, and along top of cheekbone (outer 1/4 of eye to temple area). If you have dark skin, use concealer/powder two shades lighter than skin tone. As women age, the inner corner of eye to nose gets darker – keep it youthful and light!
Do you sun burn easily? Here’s a trick that I use all the time – eat carrots. That’s right! When going to the beach or another all day outdoor activity (like boating or snow skiing) pack carrot sticks. This is good for children too. Cut 2-3 carrots into sticks, put into a Ziploc bag and you’re set for the day with a natural, internal sunscreen. Don’t forget to put sunscreen on the skin too! Additionally avoid citrus, tomatoes and alcohol while in the sun – they make sun sensitive skin even more prone to burn. And not all carrots are created equal. The longer they are cut from their green tops the more the nutritional/sunscreen benefits drop. The best carrots are those with green tops still attached. Next in nutritional quality are the premium cold-water carrots (William Boathouse Farms – Bakersfield, CA) where, once cut, they are kept at 34-degree icy cold water to prevent nutritional loss. The worst are those peeled, nugget size carrots. Convenient? Yes. Nutritious? Not so as much. FDA allows carrots to be in cold storage up to 6 months – how nutritious can a carrot be after 6 months?
Speaking of sunscreen, warm weather will be here soon. I’ll be leaving for Europe via Barcelona, Paris and Monte Carlo. Hopefully, I will be able to bring back the greatest 8-hour time released 30 SPF sunscreen ever. The models use it as a daily moisturizer under make-up and once on, it stays in the skin for 8 hours no matter how much one sweats or even swims. It is available in Germany under the name of “Day Long” – if all goes well, I will be able to offer it at a better price too! (4 ounce for 2-3 month supply for face/neck at price range of $24.95.) Thank goodness for all those modeling years – old contacts never die! I really enjoy sharing the “inside” secrets with all – it’s like a special inside network!
In conclusion, this week I’m offering a special only to those receiving the “T-Tapp Tip of the Week”. The 2 ounce WhiteBrite teeth whitener spray is buy one get one free! Perhaps you can find one of those purse atomizers. The 2 ounce bottle should last 2-3 months and with two you should be okay for approximately 6 months or it makes a great gift and Mother’s Day is just around the corner. To order from the web cart, be sure to put “2 for 1 special” after entering your name. This offer is good through next Monday, April 26th, 1999.
Until next week…
