View Full Version : Lymph system and weight loss---how do they coorelate?

In reading around on the website and in these forums and watching a Yes, You Can DVD, I hear a lot about the lymphatic system. I'm an RN, so I understand what the lymph system has to do with immunity, but don't understand how the pumping of it relates to weight loss. I've tried to read around on the internet, but may be doing the wrong searches, because I don't seem to be finding what I'm looking for.

Can anyone give me a little science behind the emphasis here at T-Tapp on the lymph system? This is very interesting to me and I'd like to learn more. Somewhere in the reading, I thought I noted something about this is where fat was flushed out, but couldn't remember any more than that when I tried to tell my husband about it.

Thanks for your time.

Joy

This is based on my own reading, and my own experience. A trainer or Teresa may have more to say regarding T-Tapp's view of the lymph system.

It has to do with toxins, the lymph being the garbage collector of your body. Your body is smart, so it tries to take toxins and store them in the least offensive place - your FAT stores. Helps to protect the body and not have the toxins run rampant in your body. That is why it is so hard to lose weight without eating right too. (or doing a detox).

Get the lymph moving, and more toxins leave your body then they don't get stored in your fat. Keep moving, and keep moving your lymph, and the stored toxins are released and moved out with the rest of the garbage collected by the lymph.

Simple explanation, probably especially so to a nurse, but it all has to do with detoxifying your body, and moving the lymph is crucial to that.

One of the most interesting books that I have read about this is the 4 Week Ultimate Detox by Michelle Schofro Cook.

Hope that helps.

Why does eliminating "toxins" help get rid of the fat? I don't understand how these relate. Toxins go, as the lymph moves more, but why does that make the fat go too?

What toxins are these? (I've always wondered about this word.) Like the "BHT added for freshness" on the cereal box? Or the normal leftovers after protein or carbs or blood cells or what-have-you are broken down, but for some reason they aren't being eliminated correctly?

Thanks.

Michelle is right. :)

This might help answer more questions. :)

Nice article/explanation, Asha! Makes me want to hop on my rebounder!

Very interesting article isn't it cool how we lose weight it's also confusing:thinkingabout: how the fat basically falls off your body. Anyway that's what we all want it to do that need to lose weight:clappinghands:

Don't even need a rebounder/trampoline - just do jog rocks twice a day! - It's my favourite for doing when I'm travelling on business and stuck sitting in board rooms for 8 hours a day.

Here's the routine I "travel by" - BWO+ in the morning before I leave the hotel -hoe downs at the two coffee breaks morning and afternoon - jog rocks at lunch time and when I get back to my hotel room around 5. Then a decent long walk, using good T-tapp form- at least 60 minutes - through whatever town I'm in, even if that means finding the local mall and walking through that - OIP, HF and AL before bed -

The hoe downs help keep me focused and clears my head when things get boring - and I figure the jog rocks help move the lymph and keep my butt from getting wider since I'm sitting.

Just my 2 cents worth!

Oh thanks for the idea Dianne for using jog rocks. :) My reboudner has several broken springs which I cannot replace and the mat has a few holes too so it is in the discard pile.

Lori I was going to say "Because Teresa said so!" but decided she wanted a more scientific answer! ;)

That was a great article. It of course says dry skin brushing is a good alternative to getting a massage, how awesome. :D

Thank you, Asha, for the link. The article was helpful.

So, this is telling me that the fluid/material in the fat cell gets flushed out by the lymph system, thus shrinking the fat cell? I guess I need to do some more biology study to understand what is in the fat cell and how that is working.

Interesting that the article said there was more lymph fluid than blood in our bodies. I remember hearing very little about the lymph system in college. Any one else with other site recommendations?

what an interesting article!

JoyCH I do remember Teresa saying in the book that the lymph system WASN'T discussed or researched as much by the medical community in the past and how the importance of it is now coming to the forefront

I also think that the massaging as in the "no lipo knuckle massage" moves the lymph which decreases the fluid or fat or toxins or whatever it is:dontknow::D and that is what has helped tighten up my body by doing this type of massage in addition to the body brushing

here's the link on that http://forum.t-tapp.com/showthread.php?t=67250&highlight=lipo

Don't you just love it, how many fun things we can do to release toxins and exess fat? Massage, skin brushing, t-tapp and other exercise, delicious fruits and veggies. And loving and laughing, of course.

Here are two links, if any one else is interested, about the hows and whys of fat burning. The places I found info on were on other weight-loss sites. Both of these mention the contents of the fat cell being in the blood stream, and mention nothing of the lymph. I'm not making a judgment either way with the knowledge I've gathered yet, since anybody can say anything and put it on the internet, but I am wondering where the lymph would play into this?

Any ideas?

If you check wikipedia for the lymphatic system, the reference says that our blood does not come in contact with tissue directly but components of our blood does enter the interstitial fluid. The lymphatic system transports wastes and fatty acids to the circulatory system.

The lymphatic system has four interrelated functions: it is responsible for the removal of interstitial fluid from tissues; it absorbs and transports fatty acids and fats as chyle to the circulatory system; and to Nicklas cells[clarification needed] and it transports immune cells to and from the lymph nodes in to the sheppardian[clarification needed] part of the bone.

This isn't the greatest resource however. I have my degrees in the medical field as well but I am sure my anatomy and physiology books are beyond out of date. I may check at the local library for more updated info.

Joy, If you continue reading the article at Wikipedia, the lymphatic system actually dumps into the circulatory system through two ducts. Perhaps there is just a different level of detail in all the articles.

Sometimes when I forget to brush during the day (which is often), I brush for a few minutes before bed, and it is so relaxing. In the morning, it looks like my skin snapped in and is firmer. I also go to the bathroom alot more since tapping. In the seminar, Teresa says you will have to buy more toilet paper, lol, and now I know what she means.

OMG. I did them for the first time today. You don't want to know!

Teresa says that she believes they are equal to a 20 minute jog. I believe her!

THANKS for the info you gave. That makes sense! I'm going to read up on Wikipedia article a little later today.

The Wikipedia article WAS helpful to me. Just search "lymphatic system" on the site. The first couple of paragraphs were the most helpful relating to this topic.

Here are some more articles (some written by Dr. Chikly) on the Lymphatic System and his therapy - Lymphatic Drainage Therapy.

I don't know if it's possible to really explain them LOL. they are the only t-tapp move that has impact.
you kind of jog in place and alternate that with rocking from leg to leg and a jumping and twisting portion at the end...sorry that wasn't much help, they really are hard to explain!

Blissful, that sounds interesting. I'm really curious and would like to try it. I went to the T-Tapp site but as always I got lost and confused and couldn't find the DVDs mentioned. I put into the search box CRT DVD and only one item came up, some program that cost $100. When I type in Maxi Max, I get a bunch of things to do with Target Pop - lifetime exchanges and such.

Does anyone have a direct link to the CRT DVD or the Maxi Max 2, mentioned above by Asha?

and on the maxi max dvd's you have to be a ttapp member( I think that is what it is called) and own the total workout and be signed in to see the more advanced dvd's in the store
HTH!! :)

Aww man the dvd that came with my CRT just shows the brushing sequence now I really want the jog rocks too. I already own Diva Derriere and Awesome Legs..I wonder if there is a target pop for Jog Rocks because I own a rebounder but it's been in my closet being used as a clothes rack for the last year and a half, lol.
