I'm posting this info here, so it doesn't get lost in the middle of the DYT thread. I learned about d-mannose from Suzanne Somers' interview of Dr. Jonathan Wright in one of her books (I think it's Breakthrough). Anyway, he is an AMAZING holistically-minded M.D. and one of the pioneers of bio-identical hormones.

d-mannose is the sugar that the E Coli are going after in your bladder. There are little tiny pockets of it lining the bladder wall. The E coli crawls along the wall of the bladder from pocket to pocket, so it doesn't get flushed out with the urine. That's why it can be such a pain to treat. BUT, if you take d-mannose, it floods the bladder in the urine and gives them WAY more to eat in the urine than on the walls of your bladder. They "let go" of the wall to eat all that sugar they're after, and then are easily flushed out when you urinate. You're not killing the bacteria, you're actually feeding it, so there's no rebound or resistance. Everybody's happy! LOL

This info fascinates me, even though I've never had a UTI in my life. I have recommended it to a friend who was getting them regularly and she said it worked great. It comes in a powder at my HFS, with directions on the package. I noticed it is also available through Dr. Wright's website: www.tahoma-clinic.com (http://www.tahoma-clinic.com) Look in the "dispensary". It should be an easy thing to keep on hand and take at the first possible sign. It's not a drug and there are no side effects.

It's not cheap, but my DD says it works well, too. She seems to constantly get them.

If she would only take it regularly, she might actually get it *all* flushed out!

I'm sure we learned about it here on the Tapp forums.

My 9-year-old DD had the symptoms of a bladder infection a couple of weeks ago. She doesn't swallow capsules well, so I opened 3 cranberry capsules and mixed the powder with manuka honey. She was hurting, so my DH took her to the doctor and they got a prescription, then he took her to school.

The insurance company wouldn't honor the prescription, so my DH left the medicine at CVS. But when Sarah came home, her bladder pain was completely gone! She felt a little touchy that same evening, so I made her another cranberry/manuka concoction - and just NOW I had an automated call from CVS asking if we were ever going to pick up that medicine for Sarah!

D-mannose is the sugar found in cranberries; if you have straight d-mannose, it is stronger - a wonderful thing to have in your cabinet! You are kind to give us this info, Moyne, especially with the blessing of never having had a UTI! May you remain so!

If you have had a UTI recently, that bacteria just goes in "hibernation" after the prescription. Just recently I was told by my doctor to take a 10-day series of the d-mannos to kill the retreating bacteria. It has worked better for me than any prescription drug I have taken.
