This week I had the opportunity to attend a lecture by Dr. John R. Lee. Many of you are familiar with his books and know he is the leading expert in natural progesterone. I know many of you are interested in this subject so I thought I’d share my notes. I still have not read the book - What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Breast Cancer by John R. Lee M.D., David Zava, PHD, and Virginia Hopkins.

I first learned about Dr. Lee through one of Teresa’s newsletters on hormonal balance. And I feel both Teresa and Dr. Lee are pioneers for women’s health. They both are offering extremely valuable gifts to mankind yet the general public is resistant to changes and new ideas.

Here are some answers that I’ve found:

You can help save your life by balancing your hormones - BUT this is only a piece of the puzzle. You need to take care of yourself in other ways too - diet, exercise, stress, and examine the use of chemicals and toxic substances in your life. Natural Progesterone cream is not a magic cure-all and you should use it under care of a health practitioner.

Why is the American Medical Association treating women with methods that are 50 years old? Many doctors don’t have the time for extra learning once graduating. The motto in the 50’s was “Better Living Through Chemistry”. It was the start of the xenohormone nightmare we must deal with today.

About our doctors - Dr. Lee makes a very good point in the intro of his book that we should treat them with compassion and understanding. The medical establishment is making it very difficult for doctors to try alternative treatments. Going against the norm opens them for lawsuits, fines, and to be labeled quacks. They have little incentive to try new treatments. It’s up to us to help them to learn to help us.

Why don’t drug companies push natural progesterone? It was the work of one medical researcher who chose not to patent it but give it to mankind. Because it can never be patented, drug companies can’t make huge profits off of it and therefore have created their own non-natural alternatives in the interest of profit.

If balancing hormones with natural progesterone is so successful, why don’t more doctors know about it and use it? Drug companies fund the medical research. It costs millions of dollars and university’s conduct these studies. Some are discontinued or the findings are often misconstrued or not published if it doesn’t support their causes.

How can there be a need for this if a woman takes good care of herself? It’s the environment we live in today. Pesticides and growth hormones are in our foods, soil is depleted of minerals, xenohormone, pollution, stress, processed foods ...our bodies have to deal with more chemicals and hormones than ever before. That’s why children are maturing at younger ages.

How was this use of progesterone discovered? One surgeon made the connection that women who were treated for breast cancer and had the surgery at the time in her cycle where progesterone levels were naturally higher did not get a recurrance. Those unlucky women operated on when the levels were low and estrogen dominated did have breast cancer recurrance.

And Dr. Lee conducted a study using women who had prior breast cancer and could not be treated with estrogen for other things (was it arthritis?) . He treated them with natural progesterone and followed them for 17 years. Not one of them died of breast cancer and at that time this was remarkable.

We keep hearing that strides have been made against breast cancer...the fact is from 1973 to 1998 incidence of breast cancer rose 40%. Thirty years ago the odds were 1 in 30, today it’s 1 in 8 that are at risk. The key is in prevention and education - not more chemicals.

What is progesterone? It means “pro” “gestation” for keeping a woman’s body from rejecting her fertilized egg. Progesterone and estrogen are meant to be balanced. Progesterone in the body is made from cholesterol, has no electrical charge, is fat soluble, and natural progesterone cream is easily absorbed through the skin and use
