kindle-on today's Oprah??

Well, I had heard of this before but never really thought it would be worth the price, but now after seeing it on today's Oprah show I am intrigued. I know there has been some discussion on this before, but just wondering if any of you have it and what you think of it. It seems like it would be really neat for traveling. I do read a lot in bed-is it easy to handle? And are you able to find most of what you want to buy online? Thanks, Bobbi

I ordered it as a Christmas gift for my husband. I had been thinking about it anyway, he is a gadget junkie (we had a TIVO when they first came out). I figured I would take advantage of the 50.00 Oprah discount.

I've been thinking about this for months...... After reading a gazillion reviews, it seems there are very few negatives, but there seems to be talk of a second generation, improved version. Curious if it is in the works or not..... Seems most books are available, and from what I've read, apparently you can use it for audio books and also ebooks. Ebooks have to be downloaded to your computer, converted and then uploaded to the kindle... Small fee for the conversion, same thing if you want to upload your Word documents, from what I understand.

I want one of these, as well, but I was waiting until the second generation came out so that they could fix a few of the "negatives" some of the reviewers were talking about. If I found one for an awesome deal, though, I'd probably jump. I'm a notorious gadget girl, too. [:p]

I would wait until next year. The drawback to the Kindle is that you have to get your downloads from Amazon. I know they have a lot of books, but that limits you. I'm amazed that this is Oprah's new gadget. It really hasn't sold that good since is it limited. Of course Amazon says it's the best.

It seems like a really expensive thing that isn't very versitile.

The Kindle books do tend to be significantly cheaper than hard copy, *but* you can't share them with others..... For me, Amazon tends to have *almost* anything I want, still have the library or bookstore for the other ones. I'm with Jen, I like me a *new* gadget! Thinking, thinking...... Wish DH was so darn organized and already have my Christmas gifts....

Thanks for the input, ladies-I'm just not sure if I can justify the cost right now. Guess I will have to do some more thinking about it. I did find that the kindle versions aren't that much cheaper than what I pay for paperbacks, but it does save on hardback prices. Of course, I can't do without my Tivo-that is one gadget I love! I bought mu Kindle in Feb. I love the convenience of having my reading material with me at all times. I am taking an on-line class and can download my PDF's and word documents to my Kindle. I can also add notes as I read. It is light weight and I carry it in my purse. It is well worth the investment.

So has anyone tried the Sony Reader? I'm thinking I should maybe wait for a newer version or for the price to go down. I'm not usually into gadgets, but this is so intriguing to me since I love to read.....Bobbi

I have the Sony Reader, and I love it. It's smaller and sleeker than the Kindle,(fold a letter size sheet of paper in half - it's about an inch shorter and same width - half an inch tall in the case.) And it's third generation (first gen was in Japan) so the bugs are worked out.

You load it like you do your iPod, and the battery charge lasts forever. You can load it from the Sony store, or other online stores like Fictionwise, etc. It also takes Adobe and Word docs. You just import them into your library from your computer or any online source.

The Kindle has more bells and whistles, but they're not ones I'm interested in. All I want is a dedicated ebook reader that also plays audio if I need it.

The one I ordered for my husband came the other day and I gave it to him. He thinks it's great, but then he is a gadget guy. (I will have to remind him at Christmas that it was his gift.)
