My husband is scheduled for a triple/quad bypass tomorrow morning. This has come as a shock to us, although it shouldn't with the heart disease in his family. He is just 62. He had been worried about asbestos in his lungs since he worked with it all the time and asked the Dr about a lung x-ray because he also had been getting short of breath when he exerted him self. Dr told him next appointment they would do a physical. So two months later (last Thurs) they did the physical and when they put him on the treadmill and put it on an incline they stopped it immediately. My husband told them he was not even working hard but the Dr told him it did not look good and he needed to see a Cardio. So that afternoon we saw the Cardio and he was sure there was a blockage and set him up for a Heart Cath yesterday morning. Well, they found one 99% blockage, one 90 and another 50 and evidentally something else looked questionable. I told the Dr I could not believe this had not showed up worse than it had because of the extreme blockages. He said to consider ourselves lucky because 25% don't show up till the person is on the autopsy table. [:0] I told my husband the reason he has done so well is because of all the fish oil and other supplements I dump down him. ;) But the Cardio had a fit because I wanted to get him off Statins. I told him everything you read about them is bad and he says the press give them a bad time when they do prevent heart attacks. I guess that is contrary to what I beleive because I have read they do not prevent heart attacks, they just lower cholesterol. I told my husband when this is all over they are not going to put him on a bunch of pills and tell him he cannot take his fish oil, eat his spinach etc. Someone told me they are on Coumadin and they cannot eat Vit K. Well, the foods with Vit K are healthy foods.
I am just looking for any good advice so when we are thru this I will know how to supplement him and feed him.
Thanks in Advance for the prayers and help. I probably won't have time to make any replys for the next few days.
Here I go again, this time it will be a success!!!

There is a book available online free of charge by Dr. Matthias Rath. Here is the link to it: http://www4.dr-rath-foundation.org/THE_FOUNDATION/About_Dr_Matthias_Rath/why_book.html
In case you have not heard of Dr. Rath, the following is a excerpt from his on-line biography:
In 1987, Dr. Rath discovered the connection between vitamin C deficiency and a new risk factor for heart disease- lipoprotein(a). After publication of these research findings in the American Heart Association journal "Arteriosclerosis," Dr. Rath accepted an invitation to join two-time Nobel Laureate Linus Pauling. In 1990 he went to the United States to become the first Director of Cardiovascular Research at the Linus Pauling Institute in Palo Alto, California.
Dr. Rath worked together with the late Nobel Laureate in various areas of nutritional research. The two scientists became close personal friends who shared common humanistic values, including their determination for peace and justice.
[excerpted from: http://www4.dr-rath-foundation.org/THE_FOUNDATION/About_Dr_Matthias_Rath/dr_rath.htm ]
Understanding that your time is limited, I searched to see what part of the book might be most useful to you right now. The chapter entitled "Specific Cardiovascular Problems" has a section called "Patients Undergoing Coronary Bypass Surgery" that starts on page 177.
May God keep you and your dear husband in love and healing energy.

Your husband is in my prayers and thoughts. My husband had a heart attack with 99% blockage two days after his 48th birthday at the beginning of this year. His GP gave him the green flag just that morning telling him that his cholesterol blood work was a bit high but nothing to be alarmed about. We view the heart attack as a gift that he was given the opportunity to change some things and make healthier choices, although he had been very proactive in his health prior the heart attack. He exercised, quit smoking 20 years prior, took fish oil pills for two years prior, watched his sodium intake, and steered clear of fast foods. Unfortunately, like your husband, he has a family genetic history of cardiac problems, along with hypertension, and strokes. Just last week we found out that he has some blockage in his carotid ateries that can cause a stroke or death if blood does not reach his brain. His cardiologist is confident that the medication he is on to control cholesterol, his low sodium diet, and other meds he is currently taking will help prevent a stroke. Nothing is 100% certain, however, I would choose my husband to take meds that could save his life opposed to worrying about the fact that he can't include Vitamin K in his diet that could have an adverse affect on his health because the leafy green vegetable prevents the meds from working. My husband has lowered his cholesterol numbers incredibly through diet change and medications. Naturally, I am praying that my husband will not have any recurring cardiac problems, although, it is inevitable as he has two small branches that are blocked and too small for stents. Along with a genetic history that we are trying to change. He will probably suffer another heart attack, but it won't be for a lack of trying to better his chances of not. You and your husband will be in my thoughts tomorrow. I am glad that your husband went into the doctors to inquire about his lungs and that they found the blockages prior to having a heart attack. Please keep us updated.

Here is some information about statins and the benefits of taking them, also I've included the link so you can read the entire article and statins side effects. Please understand I am not trying to change your views but to give you some material to read so you may have some knowledge of the drug to discuss with your husband and his cardiologist.
http://www.rd.com/living-healthy/statins-the-new-wonder-drugs/article16183.html
How Well Do Statins Work?
Overall, studies find that statins can lower LDL levels from 10 to 60 percent, depending on the drug and dosage used. One landmark study completed in 1994, the Scandinavian Simvastatin Survival Study, found deaths from heart disease plummeted 42 percent, and deaths from all causes 30 percent, over five years in patients with heart disease who took Zocor. Several other studies found that Pravachol reduced heart attacks, surgical bypass, and angioplasties in patients without heart disease by lowering LDL levels. And one study found the drug reduced overall deaths in patients who had had a previous heart attack but who had cholesterol levels that were more or less average for the general population. New statins currently under development can lower LDL levels even more -- up to 80 percent in some cases -- garnering them the moniker "super statins."
Side Benefits of Statins
The more researchers study statins, the more potential uses they're finding for this class of drug, prompting some doctors to jokingly suggest that it be added to the water supply. Among its potential uses:
Lowering CRP. Numerous studies have found that statins can lower levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), a sign of inflammation that researchers now suspect may be a better predictor of heart disease than even high cholesterol. A study in the journal Circulation in August 2002 showed that Zocor lowered CRP levels in just two weeks.
Reducing stroke risk. In several large studies of statins in patients with existing heart disease, the drugs reduced the risk of a first-time stroke between 11 and 30 percent. An analysis of several published trials suggests statins' effect on stroke risk may be due to more than just its ability to reduce cholesterol. For instance, statins improve the function of endothelial cells (the cells that make up the artery walls), probably by boosting their production of nitric oxide. This helps keep artery walls smooth and flexible and reduces the likelihood of plaque formation. Statins also reduce inflammation, make blood platelets less sticky, exert some antioxidant effects, help stabilize plaque so it doesn't burst, and help prevent blood clots.
Treating autoimmune diseases and preventing transplant rejection. In autoimmune diseases such as psoriasis and rheumatoid arthritis, an overactive immune system gets confused, thinks the body's own cells are foreign invaders, and begins attacking them. But researchers found that statins block the action of certain immune cells that play a role in these diseases. These immune cells are also involved in the rejection of transplanted organs, leading researchers to suspect that a statin-like drug could one day be used in place of other transplant-rejection medications.
By far the greatest interest in the effects of statins on the immune system lies in the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS), an autoimmune disease. In one study in the journal Neurology, statins prevented the growth of immune cells that contribute to this disease. When mice with MS were treated for a week with doses of Lipitor equal to the highest human dose, the drug reversed or prevented relapses and curbed brain inflammation, a hallmark of the disease. As of this writing, clinical trials in humans with MS were to begin in 2003.
Bettering bone health. Several animal and retrospective studies (in which researchers looked back at people who had been taking statins) found that statins may help bones grow, suggesting a possible use in osteoporosis, which causes brittle bones. Today most treatments for osteoporosis simply slow bone loss. A drug that c

I knew I could count on you guys for a weaalth of information and prayers. :D Thank YOu so much.
Hubby is doing great, had to have a triple by-pass and spent all day yesterday until noon today in ICU and is now in Progressive Care and is unhooked from everything but a drip with antibiotic, a temporary pacemaker and the drain tubes from his chest. He has walked around the corridor in his unit four times today so that is great. Of course he had job where he is on his feet all day so he was more than happy to walk. :) He is such a good patient, does everything they tell him, including his breathing treatments. They tell him they wish everyone did what they told them to. [:0]
Thanks again. [:X][^];)[:I]:D:)
Here I go again, this time it will be a success!!!

Our prayers are with you and your family as you
take this journey together. May God provide strength
and comfort to your husband through the tests/surgery to
arrive at healing/recovery.
Know that you are not alone. Our family stood in your place four
years ago as my Mom made the 55 mile journey to Boston
alone with the EMTs in the middle of a winter night for
sudden chest pain. She had a hereditary physical problem
which caused her one of her coronary arteries to block. We were in
crisis. We arrived the next morning to find her scheduled for
a cath and subsequent surgery.
It was quite a recovery period , but she resumed activities
as tolerated. July 11 this year is her 82 birthday and
she walks with my Dad 4 miles a day, is in great spirits
and is on no medications per her cardiologist.

Well, this last week has not gone as well as we had hoped. First day was good but since then it was downhill for a while. He had a bad pain in his back and they gave him megadoses of painkiller to no avail. :( Yesterday morning about 1 AM they took out the 'pain ball' and within 20 minutes the pain was gone. It took him all morning to sleep off the drugs but by afternoon he looked normal again. They took out the chest drain tubes in the afternoon and that was a big improvement, then today they took out the external pacemaker wires. He is 'finally' scheduled to come home after lunch tomorrow. :D:D:D I might actually get to sleep in again. ;) Thanks again for all the prayers. Now that I will have a schedule back I can get back to my exercises! ;)
Here I go again, this time it will be a success!!!

Glad to hear his recovery is going so well. You must be relieved. Had a thought about all the drugs in DH's system. Would he consider doing CRT brushing to get his lymph moving? After the Doctor clears him for exercise, maybe some T-tapp? My mom had surgery a couple of years ago. I brought a brush and grapefruit oil when I went to visit her. It seemed to help with the sluggish feeling from anesthesia, etc. Take care! [:X]
