hi...i've been a gung ho t-tapper since january of this year. i've done two boot camps and had great success. i absolutely LOVE t-tapp, but, i'm wanting to add some variety on my off days. i've done yoga for several years, and now i'm wanting to try something new.
i've seen rave reviews on callanetics. i've gone ahead and ordered two dvds, but they're not here yet.
my question is has anyone done t-tapp and callanetics together? i would think they'd go together well...as both are none impact and both use isometric type exercise...can anyone shed some light on this for me and let me know if doing callanetics on my days off from t-tapp would be beneficial...
thanks so much,
amber

Yes, I did Callanetics before doing T-Tapp, and occasionally I have added Callanetics to my off-days. However, although the program is an excellent one, I found it to be extremely repetitive and boring. I just couldn't do it for any length of time before just giving up because it just didn't interest me. Perhaps you'll end up loving it, but just be prepared: it's not as interesting as T-Tapp.

thanks so much for the input...i hope i didn't screw up ordering these...i just thought that they looked so compatible together...i got them very cheap from a friend of mine...so if i don't like them i'll just pass them off to someone else...but, hopefully they'll be enjoyable for me...

Amber,
Although I am a relatively new T-Tapper, I would consider myself a veteran at Callanetics. I have used the progam for years, and yes it gets boring. I typed up all the exercises and laminated the sheet and used it (along with running) during my year in Iraq. I had no DVD to get bored with, but I had the exercises. I left for Iraq in a size 12 and came back in a 4. Now, of course, in 2003, there were NO twinkies in Iraq, so I am sure that helped. Having done both, I would stick with T-Tapp as my main source, because Teresa is much more motivating, and in her DVDs she knows just when you are slacking :) but I can also attest that Callanetics works.
Take care
Michelle

I did Callanetics before T-tapp and it gave me great results and I loved how the stretches felt. I don't have a VCR anymore and yes, the workout got boring, even if my vert-e-braaaaah felt wonderful. [:p]

thank you SO MUCH cheryl and michelle. i just got my dvd's in today and will be watching them throughout the weekend to see what makes it so "great"...i was told by my friend that sent them too me that i need to watch it carefully before attempting it...which is exactly what i did with t-tapp...in fact, i watched it for a week before i tried it out...LOL!
so i'll give it a whirl next week along with my tapping and see how i like it...

I think that updated version of Callanetics is a little less boring than the older versions. Which one did you get?

Very interesting. I used to do Callanetics (mostly the original one) and they were boring, but very effective. My only issue other than the boredom factor was that they did not work my upper body (specifically arms) very well. So the DVDs are updated?
I did order the South African Callanetics a few years ago on DVD (had to order them from the UK), they were the same moves but had some differences in form and in the moves to where they work several layers of muscle at a time (Hmmm now who does THAT sound like?) :D
Overall though, I prefer t-tapp- not only do you build muscle, but you get a good aerobic workout (at least i do).

Hi Amber,
To add to everyone else's very helpful comments, I would say YES these two are quite compatible! You will see some crossover on instruction and your T-Tapp background will help your Callanetics technique.
I find Callanetics, though time consuming, to be very relaxing. Go ahead and mix it up and enjoy your variety in activity. All will work together to deliver great muscle shaping. Isometrics are powerful stuff...(as a matter of fact I'm working up an article on same for an upcoming eZine issue - how timely is that?).

Hi,
I know this is an older thread, but I have a Callanetics dvd coming my way and I also was wondering about combining the two workouts. If I did Callanetics on my TWO off days would it be too much? Or ok? I currently do the BWO+ or SATI on my off days.
Any updates of combining these?
Thanks!

Callanetics is a wonderful and effective workout, quite compatible with T-Tapp. While others have found it boring, some have found T-Tapp boring. Both programs provide great results. Another one I like to add in my rotation is ChicoMetrics - http://www.chicometrics.com/
Both ChicoMetrics and Callanetics will make your muscles quiver
I believe in mixing up your exercise routines for several reasons - (1) boredom does not set in as fast (2) there are items that you learn from different instructors and workouts that can be applied to alternate workouts (3) It is a good idea to alternate your routines to shock your muscles - if you do the same old, same old, every day - your muscles adapt to this and some experts say you get the same old results.

OctoberGal, so funny you would mention Chicometrics! I have that DVD, the Callanetics, and of course my beloved T-tapp! I like all the workouts and believe they can all be effective! Mixing it up sounds like fun! So what is your typical week like mixing these three workouts!
On another note, I found out that Callanetics has some new DVDs now- one is a sort of aerobic workout, the other is the original moves modified for better toning (using spiral rotations and such).

I will look at the link! I really enjoy switching things around. I see t-tapp as my base or core exercise, but then I like to add on and learn other things, too. I also like to apply what I learn to different things. I will be adding Yamuna Body Rolling to my evenings. http://yamunabodyrolling.com/ They say it is a workout as well as stretching. I am viewing it as my evening massage session. I love the idea of "ironing" out my muscles this way! I haven't tried it yet, but am excited. Currently I mix in some Pilates, Gyrotonics, walking (DVD and other) and whatever else strikes my fancy. I will try the Callanetics and also Oxycise (the breathing focus sounds cool).
I also would love to hear how you mix these up! I just want to keep on getting in shape, working my body and having fun! :)
Thanks!

I started out this year with Callanetics, then added Kettlebells, then threw in some yoga and pilates here and there, now I am adding T-Tapp. Mixing it up definitely helps with the boredom factor.
As far as Callanetics goes, I have her books and the original 1 hour DVD. What has helped me is breaking it down into smaller workouts or using the short maintenance workout (15-20 minutes). The DVD is chaptered to help you do this (not maintenance), but I prefer the books. The orginal book explains the entire program (longer than the DVD for some reason) and the shorter maintenance workout, along with the advanced. I also have her book "30 Days to a Better Body" or something like that. It is divided up so you can work just abs, buns or thighs or the warm up upperbody routine, or you can do the whole thing. There is stretching in each section and I really prefer it to the regular routine. I purchased my books used at the thrift store and online. The only time I use the DVD is to review form and tempo. I can roll right out of bed and start exercising wherever I am - no excuses, this is what helped me become consistent with exercise.

October gal does chicometrics work the upper body too? I liked callanetics okay and it worked for my behind but didn't do anything for arms and back. That's why I switched to T-Tapp. I have heard of people doing callanetics for lower body and regular weight training for upper but I have arthritis in my joints and don't want to lift weights.

Hi Becky,
Yes, Chicometrics does work the upper body - without weights, just as T-Tapp. If you look at the picture of Ruthie on the website (short, dark hair, and glasses) you will notice how toned her arms are.
I alternate the old Callanetics along with the new Callanetics Evolution.

I love finding out about new "weird" (as some people will put it) forms of nontraditional exercise. Gyrotonics -- wow, that looks so interesting. I wish they had a place around where I live -- it seems very compatible with T-tapp, with all the talk about the spine being the foundation and all that.
TFJ -- I do Oxycise; have (off and on) since '98. I can still remember the very first time I did it, how I felt so much better, more energy and just felt happier. I don't notice it so much anymore, but that first workout I definitely did! It's very "easy" (but really a whole bunch easier than T-Tapp is), but if you really press and stretch, you may break a sweat. I once took my pulse, and I think it got up to around 140 or 150.

One Day at a Time!
Thanks for all the great info! Chicometrics looks like fun! Do you use the older or newer DVD? Does it matter especially? I have the older Callanetics coming along with the beginner tape. I can't find the new ones used and wanted to try these first.
Oxycise looks great for certain things. I am not looking for it to replace my exercise, just for the focused breath work. I was a voice major in college, but have had some adult onset asthma, especially since moving to NC. :( Through nutritional supplementation, diet tweaking and good old central air, I have managed to avoid any attacks for multiple months now. I did a Gyrotonics exercise with a trainer in Asheville where she focused on breath in a certain pattern. My ribs "stuck" meaning the rib cage wouldn't move with my breath. I kept at it and suddenly we heard a crack on my left side and my ribs started moving again. She said, "Oh yeah, sometimes people with asthma freeze up this way." It felt like a blast of oxygen. I got lightheaded. The entire drive home I kept inhaling deeply just to feel the increase. Mind you, I was not oxygen deficient in any clinical way! Since then, I have had the cracking/popping feeling a few times, but it really enhanced everything else I do. I am hoping Oxycise gives me a regular type breath practice to keep improving this area. (Excuse the novel here!;)
Gyrotonics is cool! I am doing a shoulder rehab program of theirs. This is what gave me the above experience, but when I have strengthened my core even more I will go back to it for some extra fun! Who knows? At this rate, I may even end up fit!!
Hope to be able to create a good mix when these new goodies arrive. I am looking forward to the various challenges! I love this "mix it up" support group here!! I was feeling like people stop all other exercise except walking after finding t-tapp. As much as I am enjoying t-tapp, the eclectic workout keeps me going!
Thanks all,
TFJ

I would also like to know more about Chicometrics and the difference between the orginal and new DVDs, there is not alot of information on the website. Any details anyone has to offer on the Chicometrics would be appreciated. And now I have to go look up gyrotonics and see what that is about, so many interesting things.
TFJ - I love Body Rolling! I mostly do the back routine and it has helped so much. I love to do it after a tough workout or the next day to help loosen up and reduce soreness and stiffness.
Kelli,
Thanks! I am really excited about the body rolling kit! I figured I could at least do the spine stretch after my evening PBS and more as time permits! I don't know how much of a workout it actually is, so I figured I could do my morning workout and body roll in the evenings before bed. Sounds relaxing!
Do you mind telling me more about how it has helped you? I originally looked at it for my 18 year old daughter who has myofacial pain disorder (similar to fibromyalgia), but she thought the idea of rolling around on a ball in her dorm... less than desirable... so I decided we would try it at home and she could sample it on weekends home. I'd just love more info if you don't mind!
The Chicometrics older dvd is available on ebay, but I don't want to get it if the new one is vastly superior.
Thanks so much!

I have been having some tightness issues on the left side of my sacrum and lower back. When I do the back routine it just relaxes and lets go of the tension and feels normal again. It is less rolling and more relaxing and dropping your weight into the ball as it remains in place. You roll to the next point, stop, drop into the ball, relax and breathe. It helps with spinal alignment - I have felt my vertebrae pop back into alignment as I lay on the ball and breathe. The book has alot of information on how it works.
I also have Miracle Balls - it was developed by someone in chronic pain without a diagnosable cause, she healed herself. Your daughter might benefit from both, one for home and one for school. The miracle balls are smaller - just two of them, and they are placed not rolled on. It incorprates breathing and stretching.
Hi Kelli,
Sounds very good! I am expected my kit to arrive Monday and am hoping to integrate it into my nighttime routine. My husband and I do the PBS at least morning and night, so I think we can add the spine roll to it after our PBS. I have some shoulder issues that have improved with tapping, but I am hoping this will take it to the next level.
I saw the Miracle Balls, too. I figured we'd try one, then check out other things. She is just very sensitive about what she does in the dorm. Her roommate thought her tongue scraper was super strange!!
I am glad I am not a teen again!:D
Thanks for the info.
TFJ
Well, I finally got some of these new programs and have had time to try them. I am still not sure exactly what my best rotation is, but am working on it. I took a few days off since I had to pick my teen up from college (mono) and got sick myself right at the end of that. :(
So, I love the body rolling! Feels great, but as a massage... not really a workout. I sleep so well when I do this at night.
Oxycise: again, doesn't feel like a workout per say, but I do feel the oxygen. I get slightly lightheaded afterward, so I know I am getting something out of it. My 11 year old is adding it daily before her vocal practice.
Callanetics. I tried 10/10 today. Strangely gentle and relaxing while butt kicking all at once! I was expecting it to feel somehow more like t-tapp, but it really doesn't. Not sure where to put it or how often. Would it be too much on TWO days? It feels so stretch-like...
Haven't tried Chicometrics yet, but hope to do so.
I got Zumba dvds on ebay for some additional cardio (my 11 year old loves to dance!) and will give it a try today for my cardio.
How are the rest of you exercise switchers doing? Now that I have a few of these, I'd love to know how you do these with t-tapp without over training. Also, without spending the day at it!!:D
Thanks!
