Hello Everyone,

Yesterday I picked up a bottle of MACA capsules from my HFS. It is made by Solaray and the bottle says this:
Maca - Lepidium SPP - 525 MG. per capsule
Maca is a root vegetable that is native to Peru. It is a close relative to Mexican yam and has been used as both a food source and a medicine by Peruvians. Its traditional use is to increase energy and stamina.

So my question is....is this a good brand does anyone know? How many should I take a day, it says to take 1 three times a day with meals or water. Also, the bottle was $14.95 for 100, so not too bad.

Thank you!
Mary Ann

Hey MaryAnn ~ I have not used this particular brand so I can't offer any advice.....I used powdered MACA/tsp a day.......but I can say to start slow and build up. I think you will be happy with the product.

Try and see how you like. I have not used that product either.

I look for certified organic as well.

In general, Solaray is a pretty good brand, but I just don't know specifically for maca. For me, though, it worked better to start out with more until I started feeling the effects, then drop the dosage, as recommended by the brand I use.

Let us know!

How many would you start with? The dosage is 525 MG per capsule.

Thank you! Next time I think I will buy in bulk and just put it in my smoothie or something. I am also going to start my hubby on it.

Thank you!

What is the dosing info on the bottle? If there's a range, maybe just go with the highest and later back off if you feel like it.[?]

That's one reason I bought the brand I did, other than Denise's testimony. They have so much good information about it online, including studies and specific info about what it's good for and how much to take, etc., so I felt like they really knew their product.

Denise and Moyne,

Which product do you take? My bottle says to take 1-3 a day with meals and is 525 MG per capsule.

Also it stated Maca - Lepidium SPP.

Thanks!

Lepidium SPP is the scientific name for the peppergrass family.

There is the link to where I buy my MACA from on the MACA ROOT thread.
I take about a teaspoon of the gelatinizd MACA. I make my own OO capsules. This company was recommended by the Tooth Soap lady.

Hi Denise!

I went to the website that you linked and it states that the MACA is Lepidium Peruvianum Chacon - so is there a difference in what I'm taking?

Thanks!

MACA is from the peppergrass family. It's the root that is used. It's the scientific name for the group of grasses.

You might not be able to totally do a straight comparison. As they say here in Texas, "if I was you and you was me and we was each other", I'd go ahead and take what you've got, using the dosing amount on the bottle, and order some of the bulk stuff from "our" company, so you get it before you run out of the stuff you have. I bet it will come out to be cheaper, and then at least you'll know you're taking the kind that others have experienced success with.;)

HTH!:)

Okay, I have some more questions....DH and I have been taking the MACA, this is day 3 (and I'm taking 3 a day). Has anyone had any gas issues[:I] seriously, both of us have noticed this.

One more serious question I have is I am taking iron supplements because my stored iron levels were extremely low. On the website where you all get your MACA, I did some reading and it stated that MACA was good for anemia. So, will I be getting iron overload?

THANK YOU!
Mary Ann

Taking iron causes all kinds of stomach problems with me. I don't take it. I have not had any problems with the MACA. But I'm taking a different brand. I'm not sure it that makes a difference or not. Oh! That reminds me, I'm popping mine right now.
I'm not sure about the iron overload. Do what feels right for you. For me, I would support the liver and up the MACA.

Hmm, isn't Maca Root a libido enhancer??? My best friend is a naturopath and gave me a woman's multi-vitamin supp that had that in there and told me that it was for such. I took it and overall felt great. I don't think my husband was too bummed about my decision to take it either. ;0)

i haven't had any problems with it but i take a minimal amount and don't go overboard. it does give some energy...not like caffeine energy but mellow. i've been taking a few supps to help regulate hormones and they have had a profound effect overall. i take maca man from gnc (suggested dose of 2 per day). it makes a huge difference in the way i feel after 3pm. i work out twice a day (6am and 6:30pm) and i was struggling for engery when i first started it. i found a thread on here where someone mentioned maca so (http://www.biomaca.fr) i started looking in to it. the energy is great..and so is the extra "drive" :-). it took about 5 days before i really could tell a difference. i took 1 per day the first 2 days just to make sure it wasn't going to make me sick to my stomach. after that, i took the 2 per day dose. after each bottle, i take a week off though, even though one site i found said to take 3 weeks off.

I heard about maca on Dr Oz and gave it a shot just less than a week ago. I feel better than I have in many months ~ maybe even longer! I have energy, my thinking is more clear, and I feel stress gets to me much less. What would normally send me to tears during TOM hasn't at all! I am a true fan! I have taking 1050mg per day right now. I got it for apx $12 at my local health food store.

I have had some annovulatory cycles lately and heavy bleeding as a result of it. Also I can feel that my hormones are probably starting to get a little whacky, as I turn 43 soon. I have been reading up on natural ways to ease perimenopausal problems and maca seemed to come up several times. So I asked my daughter, who is returning from college in Slovakia in two days to buy me some (since I have not found any here in my country). It is in powdered form and I hope to start taking it as soon as it arrives. I am also going to try to take in more turmeric as I read that it helps also. Anything else I take?

Also look into chasteberry or vitex if you still have ovaries http://www.susunweed.com/Article_Vitex_RedMoonHerbs.htm

I am not in the US, but I will try to look for the translation and see if I can find something like that here. BTW, how should I take the maca powder. What's the best way? In liquid, smoothies, other food or alone - I have the powder now.

OK, I finally found the names for this plant in both Serbian and Slovak, and it seems it can be found both in the form of tonics and teas. Thank you. I will try to get some.

Maca is a root eaten by the native, so add to your oatmeal or soup, etc.

I stir mine into my yogurt. For me, the maca tones down the tartness of the yogurt. Sort of sweetens the taste a bit.

Sounds good: I do eat Greek Yogurt on occasion.
