I saw you posted this on another thread yesterday:

"And I received some good news this morning: my last surgery indicates that there is no cancer remaining in my breast! Just received the pathology report, and now I can enjoy my three-day weekend. Unfortunately, though, tests also show that chemo killed my thyroid, so now I'll have to take medicine for the rest of my life **sigh**. However, I'm still a very happy camper today!"

That is just such wonderful news! I am rejoicing with you!! BIG HUGS!! God is so good! :D

Tina,

You're so sweet!! Yes, I'm rejoicing--and my husband and I went out to dinner last night to celebrate. I feel as though I have a new beginning ahead of me and that I can work hard to make sure the cancer doesn't return. I'm taking a natural path to that end, rather than the "accepted" medical approach, but I feel that it's the right way for me. I react terribly to all types of medications, probably because of the celiac disease, so I believe the natural approach will work better in the long run. The chemo treatments I underwent for four months were sheer torture (the movies that depict such people as huddling in a corner crying, vomiting, and shivering for days are very accurate--the only difference is that the vomiting can now be controlled). The chemo burned my skin, covered me with oozing sores, left me for weeks without sensation (couldn't feel touch, heat, or cold), destroyed the lining of my mouth and gums, caused esophigitis, caused neuropathy in my feet and hands, destroyed my thyroid, made me depressed and fatigued, and other symptoms too numerous to list. I will be consulting with an M.D. who also uses a natural approach to treating cancer on Wednesday. It's going to cost big $$$ because he's not an HMO doctor, but I believe that it's necessary to spend the money in order to ensure a longer, healthier life.

Thank you so much for kind thoughts, Tina--what an upper!

I am SOOO glad you came out on top of this! As far as your thyroid goes, have you looked into Iodine? Knowing that you want to go as "natural" as possible, I would suggest looking into it. I don't know enough to know if Iodine could help your thyroid after chemo, but I do know that enough has been studied to know that all of our organs need Iodine, especially the thyroid. People have been able to get off all thyroid meds after supping with Iodine. There's a thread here, on the OT boards, regarding Iodine, or you can go to curezone (Iodine supplementation) and I'm sure they could give you more info than I have. I really hope your new MD can help you battle the side effects that you are experiencing! I will continue to pray for your continued health :)

Marnie,

Unfortunately, I'm allergic to iodine. I have celiac disease and Dermatitis Herpetiformis (which afflicts 10% of celiacs), and iodine is the trigger for it. I'm not surprised that I developed hypothyroid, since it is common in celiacs.....the chemo just finished my thyroid off. Thanks, though, for your concern and advice--normally, iodine might have been a very good solution.

Asha, as always, thank you for your kind words....and, in this instance, I will simply take my medicine. My brother called me last week to say that a bout with pneumonia destroyed his thyroid, so now he and I are in the same boat. Life is always an adventure.

congrats Laura~! I can relate to having to take meds the rest of your life. I'd rather take the Armour though and feel better each day.

You're all such great friends! And, yes, Shannon, I received the news after I e-mailed you. I went home and celebrated with my husband--and everyone I work with came up and hugged me throughout the day. I'm headed right now to a private physician to discuss the hormone-balancing regimen I have in mind. Shannon, I know YOU know how things go with chemo....let's hope that that's all in the past for us.

Thanks again to everyone!
