View Full Version : Eating around workouts

Greetings, all.

I am a newbie, and have a question...how should I eat around my workouts? I am really a beginner, so am doing Instructional 1 and 2 these days.

Should I exercise on an empty stomach and eat afterward, or eat ahead of time? I know common wisdom says "carbs an hour in advance, protein just afterward," but T-Tapp seems really unique so I didn't know if conventional wisdom applies here.

This seems like a FAQ, so please forgive me if it's posted somewhere already. I have looked around, promise, but haven't been able to find it.

Thanks a lot!

Everyone seems to be different on this but I always workout on an empty stomach.

Yeah, I do too but I didn't know if that was correct for this workout or not.

Thanks for the welcome!

It is simply a matter of personal preference, personal stamina. Some need to eat before a workout, others do not need to, or prefer not to.

I prefer to workout at least 2-3 hour after having eaten.

Performing the workout itself has nothing to do with an eating schedule, simply do what works for you.

I also work out on an empty stomach, first thing in the morning. I think excercise on an empty stomach is *most* effective at fat burning, if, big IF, you have enough stamina to get through the workout. I do notice that some days I have a harder time getting through a long one than at other times. Maybe it's because of what I ate or didn't eat the previous day.....

Thanks everyone! By the end of Instructional #2, I am a bit wobbly, for sure. LOL I've been doing my workouts after I get home at the end of the day, so five or so hours after lunch.

So far so good. I am boot camping and began two days ago...am a bit sore today but can see muscles in my calves already, so am extremely motivated.

Oh...I have a question!! Is cheese GM or MM???

Thanks!

Hi Heather!

I usually don't eat before workouts, but sometimes if I'm really hungry I will have a small snack. Some examples: fruit and yogurt, raw nuts and an apple, sometimes half a peanut (or almond) butter sandwich.

If I do eat a full meal I usually wait about 2-3 hours (like Annette), otherwise I end up with an upset stomach.

It's best to listen to your body.

Another option would be to spray some PG before and during the workout for extra energy, endurance and to curb appetite/cravings.

I used to work out on an empty stomach but found I was short on energy and performed better an hour or so after eating something.

It also depends on the exercise e.g. I can manage a short TT routine (More or Basic +) or even a longish walk before breakfast but probably wouldn't make it through anything more intense without feeling exhausted.

It takes a bit of trial and error to see what works for you (and even then I don't always get it right - had to stop a 40 minute workout last week after only 10 mins because I suddenly felt very weak. This was an hour after breakfast and I had to sit down and have another bowl of cereal. Appetite can be quite unpredictable!).
