I have some Lifeway Kefir and just opened it. It is thick and almost chunky--more the consistency of regular yogurt. Is it supposed to be like that?
I can't read the date on the lid--can it actually go bad? It smells like yogurt but I'm too nervous to try it...
Help!

I drink the Lifeway, and it isn't chunky at all, it is more thick like Buttermilk and tastes like it to me[xx(]
I mix mine with half water, and am actually used to the taste now.

I also buy the lifeway...I get the plain which is chunky and very sour for me, so I also got the strawberry/banana and mix them together. Makes its taste so much better IMO.
Good luck!

I've tried Lifeway a couple of times (my kids won't drink my homemade kefir [:P]) and it's always been very thick and smooth, no chunkiness that I can recall. DH bought the last bottle about a month ago and it has an expiration date of 10/31/06. Store-bought kefir should be able to last a month or so but if you have doubts, pitch it. Better to be safe than sorry.
Personally, the best store-bought kefir is Helios. It's not so darn thick as Lifeway and has a more homemade flavor. Sadly, Lifeway recently acquired Helios so who knows how long that will last.

I have some Lifeway Kefir too and it is chunky if you don't shake it well. So just make sure that you shake really, really well :D

Derya, I agree about the Helios, I like it much better. Sorry to hear Lifeway bought them out.
Marci, The lumps were only in about the 1st ounce because the bottle was too full and didn't have a lot of shaking room otherwise it was fine. I just like the Helios better.

I eat my flavored chunky Lifeway with a spoon like ice cream. And sometimes, for a treat, I crumble into it one of the natural cookies from the recipe that was on the Nutrition Forum a few months ago, the ones with bananas for sweetening. I just gave some to my DH a minute ago because he was wishing for something sweet. He really loved it and it's guilt-free! OLJ

lifeway is like that for me too. i like it... if you prefer it smoother, blend it w/a little water, or smoothie (i use the EAS lo-carb protein smoothies as a base every morning...), or real juice concentrate.
keep movin'..the path shows up behind you...

Thanks everyone! I tried a little last night (not too much in case I got sick :))
It wasn't bad, kind of tasted like regular yogurt to me. I'm pretty sure the date says 11/11/06 so I'm going to keep eating a little every day to try it out. I have a new cereal love that I might mix in with it for some crunch and sweetness.
FWIW, my new cereal love is Zoe's Cinnamon O's. They are SO good. I had to order them from amazon, my stores only carried her bars and granola. I want to try the honey next, but I love, love, love the cinnamon!
