hi! I just got over a icky cold. Now, my son is getting it. What do you use for your little ones when they are getting a cold? We have our festival here all this week. I hate for him to feel bad for it!

Hi Tina,

I'm a big fan of Airborne. They also have Airborne Jr. for children. I take it whenever I've been around someone who is sick and it's always worked for me.

Here's a link and I think there's a coupon, too. http://www.airbornehealth.com/

Hope you're little guy can fight it.

Grapefruit seed extract! Works wonders! Here are a couple of links:

and
www.pureliquidgold.com
It has kept me from getting sick when both my son and husband were very sick, it helped them get better in just one day and kept my daughter also from getting sick.

I also use it as an all purpose cleaner, veggie wash and it has even cleared up my sons diaper rash!

oh, GFS extract is NASTY~!! good luck getting any kid to take it. We take oil of oregano (health food store, but you do need the North American Spice brand in liquid- works the best) 3 drops for kids twice a day in a big of juice, shoot it and chase it with more juice. Also Emergen-C, they make it for kids too, Health food store or Wal-Mart if you're lucky.

I put it in OJ, 15 drops and stir really well and drink right away and cannot taste a thing. My daughter has never complained either. I have accidently forgotten to stir and yes, that was horrendous! OJ really covers the taste well.

All good suggestions, but I would also suggest Oscillococcinum. It works for our family about 70% of the time, which is a great track record.

Hi,
I really like Emergen-C; it's 'fizzy' and my kids (4&5 y.o.) will drink it. Several flavors available. Should be available in most health stores. I think it helps keep colds at bay, at least in our house.

Don't mean to sound like a broken record, but the ZiCam is great for kids and easy to give, since they don't have to take it by mouth, just a quick swab in the nose. I've dosed my son twice today because he's complaining of a scratchy throat.

We don't travel without taking it with us and one LONG trip cross-country was saved by taking it as soon as everyone started feel "scratchy". We never got past the "little bit runny-nose" stage and kicked it in just a couple days. Everyone else we knew was sick for weeks.

Tammy--I meant to look for that at Walmart but forgot. I will put it on my list. :)

Moyne--Have you read any of the "bad" stuff about the Zicam. I don't know if it is a "fake" or not. I will check more into it. I am glad that it helps you all so much. Thanks! :D

ok, Judy, I have taken LOTS of stuff, but I found GSE totally disgusting. I put it in unsweetened cranberry juice and it was still nasty and nothing covered up the taste [xx(] LOL

It does the body good though~!

About the Oscillococcinum: A friend who is a homeopath says that IHO it's great to take as a preventative. Give one or two of the little teeny pellets (not the whole tube--1-2 of the pellets in the tube) once a week. That little bit ought to be enough to help keep the immune system primed during flu season. And just one small tube is enough to use for the entire family all flu season, if everyone gets a couple of pellets every week.

Moxie, that's really weird for a homeopath to recommend giving a remedy in that manner, since that goes completely opposite to homeopathic protocol. Taking a remedy on a regular basis like that, no matter how little you take, will eventually cause a proving of the symptoms you're trying to avoid. In fact, that's how they test new remedies -- give them repeatedly like that to students and have them record the symptoms that develop (poor guinea pigs!), so they know what symptoms to prescribe it for.

We just keep plenty of the Oscillo on hand so we can give it at the FIRST sign of symptoms in the prescribed manner. (And it's for the FLU-type symptoms listed on the package, not colds.)

Sorry, Tina, didn't see your question about ZiCam. I am not aware of any "bad" info about ZiCam. We only use the Cold nasal gel and have only had excellent results. I do not use any of their other products, as they're not a strictly homeopathic company and their cough "remedy" for example, contains ingredients I will not use. Could you direct me to whatever info you've seen? I'd be very interested. Thanks!

Hi Moyne. I know--it's strange, isn't it? What my friends said when she was telling me this (a few years ago) is that by giving it only once a week she hasn't seen any cases of symptoms of the flu coming from the remedy itself. In contrast, she's seen people dose themselves with oscillo to try to treat the flu and give themselves too much, so then the symptoms increase, so they treat some more, and the symptoms get worse and worse.

And yes, it's not for colds at all, only for flu.

I have read and heard of cases of people losing their sense of smell either temporarily or permanently with Zicam as a mechanism of the gel in the nose, not the homeopathic remedies themselves). I have no idea how reliable those reports are, but it does bear researching. I've used Zicam many times with no problems, personally.

So in other words, re the oscillo, people need to follow the directions on the package! [:0]

It always frustrates the heck out of me when they market to people who know nothing about homeopathy but don't give enough info on the package for people to take it correctly -- then when it doesn't work, they think homeopathy doesn't work. I've heard so many people say they tried teething tablets which worked at first but then stopped working -- after they spilled them on the floor a couple times and scooped them all back into the bottle!;)

Interesting about the ZiCam. I've never heard that and we certainly haven't experienced it. (And I'm pretty sensitive to stuff like that...) I like that I don't have to worry about giving it on a clean mouth!

Our pediatrician recommended some nasal spray/drops called Xlear with xylitol, which prevents bacteria from adhering to nasal passages (has dental applications as well). I use it myself and on my kids when a cold is coming on, and it works really well. Great stuff. You might find it at a health food store, but you can also read more and buy it at xlearinc.com

I don't want to distract from the actual topic, but it is related...so please bear with me. I think I'm from another planet...I'm one of those that nothing seems to work for like it does for everybody else. I spent my childhood sick all the time, getting allergy shots till 18 and then later a few more rounds. Here's what's weird...I will get a "bug" and I will keep it for many weeks to several months. Minor congestion, burning eyes, sinus pain, slight sore throat, body aches, etc. and I will stay in that crappy state for WAY too long. I quit my last allergy Dr. because he refused to believe me when I tried to tell him that I don't think it's allergy symptoms, per se, but actually viral.

Dh uses both Airborne and Zicam and used to take Echinacia (Until he heard something negative about it) and does believe these things work. He will take these at first sign, and then get back to normal fairly quickly. They do nothing for me. I just do not understand...
