View Full Version : How do you get baked on burned food out of a pot?

I burned the bottom of a pot. I was cooking dried fruit and when the water boiled out it burned the bottom of the pot. It's both food and burnt. I tried Brillo pads and it didn't help. Any ideas?

Dishwasher soap. Some hot water in there with a tablet of dishwasher gunk (like electrasol or the like) and let it sit before scrubbing. From experience, it works. ;)

I've heard too that you can put a couple of dryer sheets in there, with some hot water, and let it soak, too, but I've not personally tried that one.

Best of luck!

I read somewhere fill the pot with water and boil the water and the food should come out. I've tried it and it worked.

GOOD LUCK!

The two ideas above will definitely work -
and also, Dawn Power Dissolver (spray) works wonders!

Put a layer of baking soda in the bottom and a couple inches of water. Bring to a boil...and watch it here...it tends to bubble up and over. Let it cool...Burned food should come right out.
Good Luck,
Kathleen

My grandma swears by adding a cup of vinegar and water and slowly boiling it on a stove ... it may require a tad bit of elbow grease to get it all off but, I use a mr clean magic eraser to help.

Good luck.

I usually use baking soda too. :)

Put the pot into a trash bag...pour 1/4 cup ammonia into the bag with the pot and tie the bag up tightly. Let sit overnight. The burned on food will wash out easily the next day. I've used this method on oven racks and broiler pans.

Dawn Power Dissolver rocks! I use that on bakeware that has crevices in it and food gets baked into those crevices making it almost impossible to clean. That stuff makes it wash out so easily and better than soaking etc.

Yep, I vote for the Power Dissolver, too! Spray it on and walk away. When you come back, it'll wash right off. (And it doesn't smell strong or like chemicals, either!)

I had a feeling there'd be more backup for the Dawn Power Dissolver! This stuff is great! The first time I used it I was so amazed, I went out and stocked up on 6 bottles of it, just in case they stopped making it! It works fast, and like Kim said gets the crevices, and also removes black scorch stains.

Ooh, good thinking, Chicara! I wouldn't have thought about stocking up, since I rarely use the stuff, but I'm glad to have it when I do. After I discovered Dissolve It, it never occurred to me I wouldn't be able to find more when I finally ran out of it. I went without for a long time until my mom found some and bought us each 2 bottles so we wouldn't run out again!

I use straight white vinegar, boil it -- but only if the pot is stainless steel.

The best ever is using a used sheet of BOUNCE fabric softener!! It really works, just put hot water in your pan drop in your sheet of Bounce (used or unused) let it stand for a feww hours or over night and your burnt stuff will wipe right out---it's amazing. Karen

Another suggestion,
1 cup of ammonia in the pot and place the pot in plastic bag and tie it so no air can get in. Let it sit over night and clean your pot as usual.

I tried the bounce sheet then the next day I tried the Dawn dissolver and neither worked.
I will try again and see what happens.

As for me, I'd vote to toss it in the trash and buy another!

That's weird about the Power Dissolver. Did you spray it on the pan when it was dry? No water to dilute it? Sprayed it on THICK?

Years ago we had a burned on mess in a pot and my husband set it outside and we forgot about it. It was really hot (like NOW), well over a hundred degrees for several days. When we remembered it and went out to decide what to do with it, the whole burned food part had completely lifted off the pan bottom and was just this disk sort of thing we threw away and the pot was just fine. As a last resort....!

Sherry ~ LOL!! I agree! This pot sounds like a goner!

Moyne ~ I can't believe the Dawn PD didn't work, either - sounds like the thing was incinerated and beyond all hope!

Kate ~ LOL about the PAV - I've been reading lots of past posts, and noticed all your PAV recommendations - I have gone to the site to check it out, and I have it bookmarked!
