Really need help finding a puppy!

I'm about to go crazy here. We want a golden retriever puppy. However, I'm reading so much on the net about what to look for. They say hip clearances, eye clearance, blah, blah, blah. Most of these dogs are running 1000.00 in my area. Some are cheaper, but they may not have the health clearances. I'm about to pull my hair out. I've called tons of breeders, breeder referrals, etc. Do I have to be so picky just for a pet that we will love, but not show? Please help!!
