Using soap instead of shampoo

I can hear some of you cringing out there, but I was wondering if anyone had any success with using natural soaps (like Rhassoul or others, like Dr. Bronner's Soaps) as a replacement for shampoo. I would love to use something less than a chemical experiment on my hair, but any time I've tried, it has been a disaster. (I have normal to oily hair.)
