Now, it may sound like a bad idea and perhaps asking for more trouble, BUT I tried this on our morning walk through the several inches of snow that fell a couple of days back, and they worked great! The weight seemed to give me a more solid landing by crunching quickly through the crusty ice on top as opposed to a slow, destabilizing descent.
Plus, the distance between bottom of foot and the sole, being a bit extra with layers of the weights, gives a bit more insulation from the icy bite of the cold snow below (well, wool socks help too! <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>
